got my upscaling dvd player rigged up..

finally got my samsung HD850 rigged up to my LE32R74BDX via HDMI

it is a definite improvement over s video etc but nothing startling, i knew it was never gonna be near HD but for 50 quid im actually pretty happy with the picture quality. can anyone else speak from experience, would like to hear other peoples opinions on the quality?

1 problem tho, ive only tried 2 dvds, black hawk down and LOTR3 and on both it says HDMI audio is not supported, anyone know what could be wrong? im not fussed really as i will be connecting the dvd player to my receiver using optical when i get it set up properly anyway, will this be just as good as getting the audio thru the HDMI?

im very happy with the upscaled picture that i get through my equipment but i have spent alot of money on it so it should be good imo. tv might not be compatible with hdmi audio, not a problem if u have an amp as u do. you will get better sound using the optical cable anyway as it gives u 5.1/6.1 sound. hope that helps.

i had a read thru AV forums, and they say you get a better picture setting the player to 576p over 1080i, i just did and the picture is fantastic, there is a definite and noticable improvement from when i tried black hawk down when i first got the tv to now with the upscaling player and HDMI cable, well happy with the results! :D

i think they look best in 720p, 576p is standard. 720p/1080i are upscaled. few pics of finding nemo in 720p:D

it a chip thats in most new dvd players, it adds more lines to the picture to get a better picture, std tv is made up of 576lines, when u upscale that u can do it to either 720 lines progressive or 1080 lines interlaced but you need a high definition display with a hdmi or dvi input.

that looks quite impressive, ill give 720 a try tonight, i havnt really farted about with the settings yet

sack 720p you want 1080p :p but there is only a few that will upscale to 1080p. mine will but tv won't but when i buy a new tv it will. Took it round to my mates house the other day and 1080p is s**t hot like.

which player u got mate? only screens i know that do 1080p now are toshiba's new lcd range and pioneer's flagship plasma. downloaded some stuff in hd 1080p the otherday and it does look very good:D :D i can't wait till true hd stuff becomes a bit more mainstream:rolleyes:

my mate has a pioneer 50" plasma screen, no idea what the model number is but does do 1080p.

The new Pioneer 5000ex has a 1920x1080 display and is the first plasma available here to display true HD (1080p) - I think that its only been out a couple of weeks tho if at all..... Costs a fortune - upwards of £5k.

Bought the HD950 (because it blends in with all my Cambridge Audio stuff!) on the weekend and have my 32WLT66 arriving on Saturday, so looking forward to having a play then.

Might be worth having a look on www.avforums.com with regards to the audio not supported, it definitely sounds familiar so I think it's been addressed before.

agh ok thought you ment it was not upscaling at all, which it is but the tv can not output in 1920x1080 it so it gets downscaled.

no idea what tv it is yet, he has not get back to me, is a pioneer and was about 3,500-4,000 something like that.

yeah it will be the old 506 or possibly 505 series

regards what to get it all depends on budget and how far away you will be sitting from it

well thats not true at all. i (interlaced) and p (progressive) are massively different. Most screens will not do 1080p only the very top end screens can at the moment and they would have to be over 42" aswell.

actually david all screens are progressive by nature they convert interlaced pictures to progressive


1080i 48/50/60 = 1080p 24/25/30

what the current screens mostly cant do is 1080p 48/50/60

The following examples refer to content that is encoded in progressive-scan form during recording or transmission—what would be considered "native" progressive signals. However, where 24 fps film-based material is concerned, a 1080i encoded/transmitted stream can become a true "1080p" signal during playback by deinterlacing to re-combine the split field pairs into their original progressive film-scanned frames. Regarding 24 fps film-source material presented in conventional 1080i60 form, the deinterlacing process that achieves this goal is usually referred to as "3-2 pulldown reversal". The importance of this is that, where film-based content is concerned, all 1080-interlaced signals are potentially 1080p signals given the proper deinterlacing. As long as no additional image-degradation steps were applied during signal mastering (such as excessive vertical-pass filtering), the image from a properly deinterlaced film-source 1080i signal and a native-encoded 1080p signal will look exactly the same. As more and more processors and displays come to market able to apply 3-2 pulldown reversal to film-based 1080i60 signals, the amount of available "1080p" content for viewing expands (encompassing film-based 1080i60 feeds from broadcast HD, cable, and satellite).

Broadcasts

Even though various television networks in the world broadcast HDTV programming in 1080i and 720p, no 1080p broadcasting actually exists at this time. Material that has been digitized from a 35-mm film source is basically 1080p24 though, fit into 1080i50 or 1080i60 (progressive with segmented frames) and with proper 3-2 reversal deinterlacing, can be converted back into a true 1080p signal (see above explanation).

does the 32" do 1080p aswell? if so should have cracking pictures:D is the hd950 a dvd player?

It hasn't got 1080p, but does 1080i so will be fine for me.

Yeah the HD950 is a Samsung upscaling DVD player, can't wait to connect it all up on Saturday and have a major slob-out session!

i asked my mate to read what you put and he seems to disagree with you. However i can't be bothered to argue with you about it so i won't. But rest assured being the marketing manager for sony uk he knows what he's talking about.

are you arguing that lcd/plasmas are not all progressive by nature then ?

all lcd/plasma show you a progressive picture its how they work.

the reason most tv's dont do propper 1080p so to speak is because they wont accept 1080p50/60 inputs as they cost too much to produce as they require very high bandwidth

i thought that was just checking tho, found out the tv he is getting has a res of 1366x768 so no it would'nt do it:rolleyes: got a 5:star: in what hi-fi and they said it's got faultless performance so should be a gooden:approve: . what equipment you got mcbunny, not trying to be funny just would like to know?:D

err a 21" 10 year old tosh crt :p

i just know about this stuff i have done alot of research into all this stuff so i can fully understand it :)

my a/v budget got spent on a vx220 last weekend :)

my mate has the 32wlt66 and i must say it is very nice indeed :)

he knows a lot more than you'd realise, he has to to know everything about the technology....what he actually markets is a different matter, i would imagine you wouldn't be so naive about such a position, clearly i was wrong.

Maybe you should suggest he consults the internet before making marketing decisions, because he clearly doesn't know everything about technology!!!! :rasp: ;)
