Does it have to go on the outside of the car? Or does that just help get a better signal?

Also, does it work on line-of-sight to the satellite or is it like radio waves that come in everywhere?

You dont need to put it on the outside but you need to get it near a window. If your windows are smoked though(very likely) you need to put it near the front patch on the front windown. you can just see mine to the bottom right of the screen

it can be elsewhere in the car, mine is at the back of the car looking out of the rear window next to the parcel shelf.

i have tinted rear window will that stop it, or will i have to place it at the front somewhere?

GPS receiver shouldnt be greatly affected by the tint of the windows, although the front is somewhat reflective also. Ive got my receiver (for origin B2) on the rear parcel shelf, with the cable neatly and easily routed down the drivers side of the car.

Having line of sight (with the sky) will massively increase the reception.

Best to mount them so they have no metal above, if you look carefully you can see mine near the renault elf stick on the rear screen, works perfectly in that position.

agree with Mike mine is in a similar place although on the drivers side on the plastic at the side of the parcel shelf, no probs here.
