Groundhog Day idling problem!

  Clio 1.6SI
Can anyone come up with a diagnosis for this idling problem with my 1999 1.6SI?

For a few days the idle speed will be normal at about 850 and driving smooth. Then over a few more days the idle speed will gradually but intermittently increase - the fault now also being evident while driving as deceleration isn't smooth. Within a few more days the idle speed is cycling up and down between 1000 and 2000 every couple of seconds, and smooth driving is impossible with the car 'kangarooing' as soon as I take my foot off the accelerator. I then disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes, resetting the ECU (?), and everything instantly returns to normal. Then we start the cycle all over again.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've been through this half a dozen times now and it's wearing a bit thin!

Many thanks.
