Handbrake Issue

Just tried to go out in the car and the handbrake seems to get stuck when trying to release it. pushed the button on the handbrake than pushed it down to no avail, it doesnt go down much and seems to get locked or stuck on something even with a little more downward pressure no more movement.

Can't do anything tonight as its dark and the interior light isn't working

Does anyone have any suggestions to what to do and look for in daylight.

pull the plastic cover off round it and have a look for coins in there, i had exactly the same thing it went up and down fine but stopped short of the bottom and held it on a bit and it was because a 50p had rolled under the lever
