Harness Mounting Point

Hi Everyone,

Just wondering where the best place would be to mount the eyebolts for my 3 point harnesses?

cheers

Short of a harness bar or cage, rear struts are the "best" place.

There is an FIA document somewhere about rules & regs for harness placement. general idea is that they should be within 15 degrees (IIRC) of the horizontal but can have much more (30 degrees IIRC) of an angle when viewed top down. All intended to avoid "submarining."

EDIT: Assumed you were on about the shoulder belt mount. Again for lap belt mounts the FIA gives guidance and it's a similar thing, roughly vertical when the car is viewed side on. Ideally you want to be cutting two holes in your floor and using "high tensile" bolts with metal plates either side of the chassis floor to distribute the force in the event of an accident minimising the chance of failiure. A lot of people seem to use the standard seatbelt mounts (i.e. one on the side of the seat/subframe/whatever and the other being at the bottom of the B pillar) Whilst not ideal if it's good enough for road cars... (flawed logic?)

Would be very interested to know how many people do have their harnesses mounted correctly, especially with regards to the lap belts.

Yeh just wondering about the lap belts really. I'm using the bolt holes for the rear seat belt buckles as ive seen people do this for the shoulder belts.

Hah, love the irony. So in asking where is the best place, you're decided to put them in one of the worst places :p Not saying I'm a doctor who's seen loads of crushed spines from badly-installed harnesses, just passing on the info written by the proffesionals. Even if you do think FIA/MSA/whatever regs are "overkill" in anyway for "just" a few trackdays then 1) surely safety isn't the most sensible area to skimp on and 2) you can have just as bad a crash (decelleration/speed/injury wise) on your way to tesco or on a track day than if you were in high level motorsport.

EDIT: With regards to the "proper" way of doing the lapbelts (hole in floor, steel backing plates & high tensile* bolts) I'm sure there are better/worse places on the Clio's floor to be drilling through/mounting stuff on.

*Who knows how high a tensile strength you actually need. No doubt all the "high tensile" stuff on ebay etc is produced to no standards at all or the lowest "grade" needed to pass a BS/DIN/etc standard.

oh yea definitely dont wanna skimp on safety. I just thought that was the best to put them as every other clio i've seen has had them mounted there.
