Has the mechanic damaged my car?!

  AB182, Audi A5 3.0
Im having a day from hell!!! I went to go see a mechanic to see if they could diagnose my PAS pump problem, they guy thought the belt was rubbing on the tensioner spring and then decided to use a big ass crowbar to try and move it away!!! in the picture below you can see where he pivited the end of the bar to apply pressure on onto the sping to see if it would move away (which he commented 'well its not moving')!!! Could ha have caused any damage doing this??

Also got a puncher whilst visiting the garage!!

bloody hell !! name and shame.after him doing that i would have demanded money for a new aux belt kit.

if it was me i would change it.

also the tensioner is meant to be that close

I'd wipe the crap off the belt and check theres no splits or anything. Lets hope it didn't damage the tensioner. What an idiot!.

I use the garage for various things so wont name and shame. I think the mechy was a newbie that clearly wont last long if he keeps that up. Unfortunatally i coulnd wipe it off as I had to rush off to work. I will check the best I can for marks/rips/punchers on the belt tomorrow; is there an easy was to turn the engine over slowly without jacking up the car and turning a wheel?

Yeah put it into gear. Second would be easiest. Let the handbrake off and push it. That will turn the engine over slowly.

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
because it hasn't sprung back into the correct position, and I've seen it dozens of times

No I wont be going back either. After looking at it myself today though, it does look like the tensioner is touching the belt and cutting a line into the middle of it! (see picutre below). Looks like this problem is all boiling down to crap workmanship from the garage who changed the belt 4000 miles ago (before I had it), known as Bucks Renault!!!

dan does this mean my pump may be ok and the belts just loose?! When checking it today, I could see that the PAS pump wheel was stalling out when it made the noise (could physically see it stop moving)..?

I would have, but you guys wanted £700 which the garage I bought it from said was way to high! I have used you guys in the past though on non warrenty claims and the work done there looks pretty good :)

I am going to try the unipart place in exmouth as they seem to be my closest renault specialist.

its either a broken tensioner (so the belts on tight enougth and slipping) or the power steering pump bearing from what i have been told. I will know more when I get it looked at a bit closer (hopefully on tuesday)!!

I think they quoted you for pas pump and aux belt kit, for a warranty repair it has to done by book times and codes so is it the actual garage who are paying or there warranty company? The noise sounds like a build up of pressure causing the pump the stool (pressure relief valve not doing its job properly) this may in turn could of cause premature failure of the tensioner!?

£700?????????????? jesus f**k!!!!!!! £72.60 fo the aux kit, 1.5-2 hours absolute maximum to fit it including removing the bumper

Haha, I could do it blindfolded in 1.5 hours! Regardless of that it's renault book times for pump, belt kits and refilling! Obviously if it was a paying customer and not a warranty job the cost would be far less!

Makes me cringe when we charge 15mins labour to change megane light bulb that actually takes 1 whole min if that!!

The actual garage (they apparently have there own warrenty system in place). I remeber you saying my tensioner didnt look replaced and im inclined to agree with you on this; Bucks Renault have clearly taken the piss out of the previous owner! Im supprised its only a 1-2 hour job, your service desk man quoted it for 6 hours labour :S Does it take considerably longer to fit a new PAS pump as well?

I've done a PAS pump and full aux kit in under 2 hours. YOu need to take it somewhere that knows what they're talking about. This is why independent specialists exist

Ouch at the £700. Out of interest, where are bucks renault based, they got a website? The fact your in Devon, im guessing we arn't talking about a Buckinghamshire based renault garage?? (ie- DGL)

Yeah, Im sure incy could do it under 2hours as well, but as he said the price is set by renault and not the mechys. Hopefully Carlton Garage in exmouth can give me a better price that my dealer will be willing to pay. Anyone else used these guys before and got an opinion?

Yes they are based in Buckinghamshire, which is where the previous owner lived I guess. I have had no dealings with this garage and never will after seeing what they have done, even if they were the last place on earth (i would do it myself in that event)!

Yeah it sucks ass that receptionist scare people away, if you get stuck and have to pay outta your own pocket then I can have a word and get the labour reduced. Failing that PM me for private ;)
