HDMI, is it really worth it?

I've just tret myself to a new TV and DVD/surround sound package and the salesman was waffling on trying to get me to add a HDMI cable at a cost of about £60!!!

Anyway, I know what the cables are but I have no HD source at present. The DVD player has 1080p upscaling and the TV 1080p full HD capability.

Will a regular Scart be sufficient or should I really invest in HDMI to make the most of the package?

Cheers! :)

It depends, theoretically hdmi should give the upscaler a better pic, however i found that using RGB scart on mine gave better results. I think all tvs differ tbh.

A £1 HDMI cable WILL display EXACTLY the same as a £10000000 HDMI cable.

Unless you get artifacts on the screen, and need better shielding or something, get the cheapest HDMI cable you can find... cheaper the better.

Get a cheap HDMI cable, tested on The Gadget Show the other week that the price makes no difference to what you see.

A £5 HDMI cable will do the same as their "superduper" £60 job.

So it's a waste of time/money Daz without the HD source?

my 1's and 0's are better quality than your 1's and 0's :rasp:

Yea.. I have silver connectors, so I have some 1.5's and 0.8's :(

i'd say get a HDMI cable just make sure it's cheap lol

Agree.

u only need an "expensive one" if you run it with all your tv and dvd and sky 240v power leads because the cables are screened but thats if your getting interferance

im sorry but if you have the option you would be silly to connect via an analogue method if a digital one is available to you

Slightly off topic, but I didn't think you could get 1080p from DVD, only HD DVD or Blu Ray (or alternative HD media source)?

And yeah, HDMI doesn't need to be made of Gold or Platinum and cost more than it ought to, it's like spending £50 on a USB cable, when a £1 is faultless. I think the £13 cable you bought is ok pricewise for the length.

And yeah, all TVs are different, but why link the source to the TV via an analogue connection, when digital interface is available...

I agree on the whole, hence my question :)

Lets hope my £13 hasn't been wasted! ;)

Thanks for the help so far guys!

i bought a hd tv a year ago and imo the dvd upscaling isnt all its cracked up to be! it mayb takes a bit of the pixelation out of the film!

since purchasing the ps3 it all changed as blu-ray films and hd gaming is ace!

i would use it if u got it!

They covered this on the gadget show, as it's a digital signal it's either there or not, so a cheapo one is just as good.

i'd be more worried about the resistance of the cable than the negliable (sp) amount of the connection on the end

Indeed. Capacitance is the real killer with high speed signals though....

Anybody who believes that spending more than 10 quid on a cable seriously deserves to have the money liberated from their wallet just for being a dumb ass.

not enough resistance to worryabout in cables under 10meters.....no matter how thin they are... wire is wire....

Did you know cooper has less resistivity than gold.

Copper oxidizes quicker than gold though, which is why gold has traditionally been used on pcb interconnects.

That said, we had a batch of PCB prototypes that we didn't build for about 4 months, we didn't realise that they'd been "silver" finished. By the time we came to use them they were unsolderable as the silver had oxidised. They had to be returned to be chemically cleaned to restore the surface.

The RoHS directive has turned soldering in the UK & europe into a nightmare.

yes but copper and aluminium dont go so well when currents are passed through them....some connections on systems are ally...the gold stops the copper and ally corroding.... thermocouple basics 1.0.1 :D

and the above :p
