Headlamp washers - leaking

Car  clio 182 FF silver
Hi
Managed to get wiper arms off (with tool!) and have got headlamp washers working with new pump but had to remove small filters/valves from tubing to washer jets but water now leaking out of one of the jets and draining the washer bottle,so question - are these valves to prevent leakage? if so how do they work. If not is there a problem with valve in the pump?

I have been told that there should not be filters/valves in the lines between pump and headlamp washers? is this correct, does anyone else have them?

They're non return valves, similar to what you use in an aquarium I believe. They make sure something can only pass one way, so it stops the air going back down the hose, and the fluid coming out the end when the pump is off.
