Headlight adjuster problems

  350z, Subaru Legacy
Where my car is quite low my headlights were pointing at the road, so I faced the car up against a wall at night, with headlights set to manual mode etc. Adjusted the headlights and shortly after realised that they were now pointing wayyy to high and lighting up the tops of houses.

Upon trying to adjust them back down again, nothing happened, would no longer move up or down.

So I took the bumper off and got the headlight units out for a closer look.

With the PCB and motor removed you can see the black rod that is supposed to fix into the white cog a lot more clearly. It appears that the rod has fallen out of reach of the cog. I can't work out how to re-attach the two. I tried pulling the black rod quite a bit but it didn't seem to move much. I tried rotating it - but couldn't really notice it moving. I have also forgotten which way you turn the white adjuster for up and down so that didn't help lol. Anyone remember?

It started getting dark and I needed to get the bumper back on anyway. So defeated and can only drive in the day - i.e. weekends lol :(

I found this post which is similar

Are you sure it hasn't just come away from the white part inside the unit?

It doesn't seem to reach the hole in the white cog circled in the last picture, strangely turning the white cog that surrounds the black rod doesn't seem to do anything either as if the two aren't connected...

Going to have another go looking at this on Saturday. If I can't work out how to sort it, I will have to buy some new ones :dapprove: ffs.
