Heater fan packed up....... Cold!

  Iceberg 172
So I started the engine this morning and put the fan to Max temp and windscreen demist, came back 2 mins later and..... still iced up :(

Controls all work as normal and I can hear the clicks as it tries to work, but no fan. Done a search and the Resistor pack seems most likely culprit, so

1) How do I get the scuttle panel off to get to it? and

2) Can I test the resistor pack somehow before I definitely fork out for a new one?

thanks....

One push in the center clip and then just pull it out the way from memory

Best tst the fan if that works then check the resister pack is getting a reading from the cabin air con unit most likly youll find there power to the unit and the fan works so the resister pack is failed

i had a 172 in the other day, heaters not blowing hot, was a blocked heater matrix, just flushed it through

So can I bypass/short the resistor pack to see if the fan works? Sorry if that's dumb, I'm no mechanic. What does the resistor pack control - the fan speed?

I'd doubt it's blocked, it worked fine yesterday then nothing this morning. It's not blowing cold..... it's not blowing at all!

cheers for the replies guys.

I haven't had the scuttle panel up yet - it was dark tonight - are the motor connections obvious?

  Iceberg 172
Yeah, cool did it in the dark last night to have a poke around once I'd realised the plastic screw was a plug and not a screw......

Will be undertaking further testing / hitting with a hammer in daylight tomorrow.......

OK, so shorting pins 1 & 5 puts the fan on full blast, does this mean it's DEFINITELY the resistor pack?

Sounds like you've sussed it, but if that doesn't work out keep an eye on your coolant level. The headgsket has gone on my car and the first sign was only cool air being blown in. Topping the coolant back up cured the heater problem, but obviously not the gasket problem.

Thanks edde

Think so Ian. Not head gasket - it's the fan that's not blowing that's the problem not a lack of heat.

I have heat again! :)

Bought the offending rheostat yesterday (part no. 7701051272, "Heater Switch" says Renault's invoice ) and swapped it over in about 20mins today.

Only difficulty is getting to the 6mm nut on the far side of it without removing the other half of the scuttle and the wipers, which didn't want to pull off. Got there in the end with a stubby spanner and some skinned knuckles.

Thanks to all those who helped diagnose, including previous threads. Cliosport Membership pays for itself several times over yet again. :star:

Had to replace my one of these today.
Got a 'slight' discount on stealer price.
Fitted in about 25 mins.
An observation:
Could the fact that the join between the resistor pack and the wiring plug that goes into it is immediately below the bottom edge of the windscreen be a pointer as to why a fair few of these go?
I'm thinking, rain, screenwash etc, drip off the bottom of the screen (albeit a small amount that makes it past the leading edge of the scuttle), *glug glug glug* right onto the electrical connection for the resistor pack.

Was in the car today and my climate control wouldn't heat up.

Only struck me when I got home that my climate regulator fan is unplugged as my interior light surround is away to get "carboned" lol

Will the car not blow warm air if that is unplugged? :S
