Heeeeelp pleeeaaase - 2010 RS Cup Clio

  2010 Clio RS Cup
Hi all,

I’m new to all things Renault and looking for some help.

Acquired a 2010 Clio Rs Cup a few weeks back. 62k on the clock. Lovely little thing. Had it checked out by Renault soon after the purchase. They confirmed it was in amazing condition and had been treated with great care. Full service history and receipts of all events. Nothing showed on diagnostics. Happy days. Fell in love with her 😉.

Last week I had to help start a Kia Sedona with jump leads. I followed the procedure by the book to avoid any incidents. I wasn’t aware an ECU could be screwed up by doing this but I can confirm my car has been running like crap ever since. Feels like it’s got 100bhp until it hits 5000 rpm before some power kicks in.

I took it to Renault yesterday who did a diagnostics check - they were kind on the bill as I’d only had it looked at 2 weeks earlier so they sympathised. They knew it had no issues 2 weeks ago.

They found an error with the cam shaft positioning sensor and reset it and said hopefully that’ll sort it. If it doesn’t bring it back and we’ll have to do a full diagnostics (whatever that is compared to partial?)

I drove it home yesterday and rang them to confirm it wasn’t running well at all. They said the ECU would need to re learn it’s workings as it’s been reset, see how it goes over the next week and again if it’s not up to speed we’ll have to do a full diagnostics run.

Hoping to help it bed in and learn it’s workings some more I took it out again yesterday for half an hour and onto the motorway. Again very poor power and a lot of noise / effort it trying to get to 5000rpm before I kick and on the motorway it struggled to pull at all especially from 70 onwards in 5th or 6th gear. It really was struggling.

Have any of you experienced this misfortune? Is it an easy fix? I really hope so 🙏🙏🙏

Any guidance greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Mike

This sounds strange. I’ve heard of issues with alternators after jumping cars but not the ecu being buggered!

sure someone will be along to help soon.

On a side note I always refuse to jump folks cars and just tell them ive got a weak battery for fear of any issues!

Thanks for the reply. I hadn’t heard of it doing so either until after the event. Googled it and loads came up. Renault confirmed my concerns so I guess it can. Bugger. Hard lesson learnt

I personally, would find yourself a trickle charger, remove the battery, fully charge it over an evening/night and pop it back on in the morning after cleaning the connections.

Then see how it feels.

Tried a code reader yourself?

Thanks a lot for the replies people [emoji120]

Very much appreciated.

I’m no technician - I’ve got it booked into Renault on Monday... I’ll take forward your knowledge... you’ve given me hope it can be rectified and restored to her former glory without toooo many tears £££ [emoji120]

Thanks

Ps I did try a code reader. It came up clean. I believe they only pick up on engine related issues and not anything outside of it. Took it into Renault for their diagnostics check which picked up on the cam shaft positioning sensor error code. They cleared that and hoped it sorted it. It didn’t sort it.

They said bring it back in and they’ll do a full diagnostics check and see what comes up. To be fair they just fitted me in on Saturday so only had an hour or so to go at it.

Thanks again for the info - I’ll pass it on.

Will it be ok tootling around in the meantime?

But clearing it is slightly different to resetting the ECU. If the ECU still thinks the cam sensor info is duff, it'll ignore the signals and not activate the VVT. If you can, try battery off for at least 2 hours and a full charge.

Ok thanks.

FYI...

Renault seemed nervous about resetting the ECU from the off. Saying they seek to do this almost as a last resort as commonly an ECU being reset can throw out the running worse than the problem itself [emoji2369].

He said in the past they’ve had to seek permission from Renault or RS to completely reset them due to them causing further problems with the running [emoji2369]

Amos1 when you say take to a specialist and not Renault can you advise further please?

I figured I was taking it to the specialists.

Pardon my general ignorance on anything tech [emoji6]

I was checking to see if there are any indie specialists in your area but I don't think there are any now. @imprezaworks I think you're in that area if you know any?

The majority of us wouldn't take our cars to a Renault dealership and so far it looks like their investigation has been a bit weak!

Only one I recommend is birchdown in Cheshire.

You sure the leads were put on the correct way?

Massive spike may course the issue. Have you tried disconnecting the battery for a bit and see if that helps?

Can't say over the years jump starting a car causes your issues. Well on here anyway

Bolton to Malpas ( Birchdown Autos) is only about 1hr 15mins away. Get it booked in with them. They're always busy so you might have to wait a couple of weeks.
Take it to a Renault dealership and you probably won't be any nearer but £££'s lighter.
If you phone them they might give you a bit of advice over the phone as what to do. They're always very helpful.

Definitely worth giving Birchdown a ring - as @imprezaworks said I've never heard of it happening before and have jumped multiple cars with the Clio.

Hope you get to the bottom of it. (y)
