HELP - Alarm concerns

I apologise in advance if there's already a thread on here about this however I've done a search and couldn't find anything similar to the query I have...

Basically, my key fob locks and unlocks the car fine every time and haven't had a single problem with it, however I've noticed that whenever I unlock the car the LED by the gear knob lights up and is constantly illuminated until I turn the ignition. As soon as I switch the engine off and take the key out the light is illuminated constantly again until I press my fob and then I goes off. The LED on the instrument panel flashes once it's set, however the LED by the gear knob doesn't and I would swear that it used to flash too...

Any ideas whether this is normal and how I can test it? I'm concerned that It's not working properly and don't want to run the risk as I'm going away on holiday soon and will be paranoid!

what alarm is it mate?

why dont you set your alarm on, leave it a few mins then try to open the car with the key to see if alarm goes off?

It's the standard alarm as far as i'm aware. I'm obviously naive, didn't realise that would work, I'll give that a go later. Any ideas what it could be if that doesn't work?

Tried the above an nothing...doors open fine but no alarm :S
