I hate seeing amazing pictures that blow me away to only find out they have been taken by the kit lens... and end up think how the f**k lol!
As DK said, any SLR.. bar a few Turkeys will be much better than any P&S or Bridge Camera. The good thing about them and the glass, is that they generally hold there value pretty well.
Actually, the glass holds its value for ages and neither Canon or Nikon change there glass that much, just the bodies!
