help diagnosing noise

There is a knock/creak coming from the left rear. I've had the noises for 2months now.
Its not a scrapping sound, definitely more of a creek than a knock.
Today though when I was putting my rear seats back in, I stripped down all the interior plastics from the rear and went for a drive. The noise was still there.
I gave the rear tyre a good shake (car was on the ground not jacked up) and there was a creak from behind the centre of the wheel, sounded like the hub or towards the bottom of the shock. I first thought top mounts due to how loud the noise is inside the car but now obviously it isn't

Well the shock isn't leaking, no cracks in the spring. As I said, if you shake the wheel on the ground there is a creak coming from the centre of the hub. Could this be worn rear suspension bushes? Rather not replace the shocks if I don't need to
