Its not next to the interior light, i've been told its behind the gear stick but i cant seem to find anything that looks remotly like a sensor.. really frustrating

I assume you mean the IR receiver? A '99 will be either IR or RF and if it was IR it would be near the rear view mirror. As it sounds like you can't find it we can assume yours is RF in which case the receiver is built in to the MTU.

Multi-timer Unit which is the body control module. It lives next to the glove box under the dash but you can't just grab one from another car amd fit it, they don't work that way... the vehicles security info is stored on it which is unique to each car.
By fitting one from another car will cause the immobiliser to stay active.
