help - high revs after spark plug change problem

  clio
Hi,

I've just changed the spark plugs on my partners clio 172, pretty routine stuff although a bit of a pain taking everything off.

However i have been a little clumsy and i broke the air intake pipe (the plastic bit that juts out from the top of the pipe). The hose feeds into the back of the engine block.

Didn't think this would cause much of a problem...however on starting the car it gives out high revs 6000+ i have to kill the engine as I don't want to do any damage.

Also I didn't replace the seals, some say do and some say don't.

I can't see a seal on the section that is at the back of the plenum does it need one?

I can only see it being of the following issues...

1) Air inlet pipe being broken (i've ordered an 2nd hand one off ebay for £10, Renault wanted 91.50 for one!)
2) The seals not being present
3) I have dislodged a hose somewhere
4) The plugs are fully in??? but wouldn't this cause a misfire and lumpy idle rather than revs revs and more revs?

Please help me, my girlfriend loves her Clio 172 and i think she is going to kill me seeing as i said it was a straightforward job.

I've looked at the guides and i can't see that i have done anything wrong...any pointers however simple they might seem would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Rich

Air leak post throttle butterfly.

Take it all off (not the plugs) and do it properly ! Pics of what you've broken !? I don't know what you mean....

Think you mean you've broken the breather pipe? Yea for it to rev up you must have an air leak after the throttle body. Plenum - inlet gasket ok?

Yep reckon it must be the plenum gasket, must have come off when i took it off -- its no where to be seen though???!!?! I've checked all down the back of the engine but i can't see it anywhere.

How much for a new gasket? DO i have to order from Renault?

Pic below, doesn't seem to be a seal on mine here i can only assume it has come off.

This is the pic of the bit i have broken - this would cause a leak but surely not to cause the high revs that i have mentioned?

Thanks for the replies :)

The snapped off breather wont really cause any short term problems. Can get gasket sets off ebay but a renault one should be cheap enough.

Edit: just realised u mean the oval rubber seal under the inlet?? Use some silicone for a short term fix.

Thanks for the replies guys, wonder what happened to the original seal, i can't see it anywhere.

It must be that seal that is causing the high idles though?

Thanks
