**HELP**I think I've wrecked my clutch :(

  BMW 1 Series
Was on my way home from town today, everything was running fine. pulled up at a roundabout, put into 1st, tried to pull away and my car just sat there revving. I thought it'd slipped out of gear, tried again, and smelt burning clutch :(.

I managed to get my clio home, although what happens is that i can put it into gear, it'll rev loads, suddenly jolt forward a bit, then repeat. and i cant get any higher than 2nd gear lol

Opened up the bonnet at home and gave the clutch cable a pull and it seems very loose. anyone know how i can fix this quickly and cheaply as its the lakeside meet on sunday :(:(

Thanks

my mate had a simler thing with his corsa its was his selector but he could only use 2nd and 3rd

dont no if that helps

well the thing is, i can roll along in first, and second at a push, the moment i try and move anywhere in third it just stalls. but even with first and second, it feels like its about to stall then all of a sudden my car will jolt forward a bit, and then repeats the process :(

i honestly have no idea :( i did notice yesterday that my induction kit was sounding a lot louder than normal but it sounded fine again today, then this happened :s

as far as i know its still the original clutch and gearbox in the car, which hit 76,500 miles today :(

I know this doesnt help at all but im on 74k and its had a recon box and clutch, but was probably driven like a piece when it used to live up north. People on here have had 100k+ on standards.

im completely confused as to what it could be, as it was all running fine and smoothly until just now, no crunching of gears, clutch has always felt nice and strong. until now when it just started stinking my car out :(

is there any way to try and tighten the clutch cable? as it is quite loose

Surely the natural position is for the two clutch plates to be touching each other, therefore transmitting drive to the box.

If the two plates are stuck apart, like you've got the clutch down, then you wouldn't get any drive?

I'm guessing now, mind. lol

You're saying it doesn't move when in gear and the clutch is up - if the speedo rises and falls with engine revs but the car doesn't move then there's some sort of pin that has snapped in the gearbox! Can't think what it's called but it's fairly common on Williams that have been driven hard, at least.

ahh nah i dont think its that, its hard to describe, i put it into gear, went to accelerate, and it was like the car was sat in neutral, then all of a sudden it jolted forward as if it was fine, and then would sit as if its in neutral again :s

So it won't pull away normally in ANY gear at all? Could be box related, doubt its just the clutch as it'd tend to slip or otherwise, I can't think of anything the clutch can do to make it behave like that.

Will it roll ok without any restriction? Selecting gears good?

My car has 135k on the clock and the original clutch is fine so i doubt it will be that, are you 100% its going into gear? Selecting first gear is a little iffy at times.

cheers for all the input guys, had my mate who works for renault come and have a look this evening. apparently i definitely need a new clutch.. but he said he cant do it on the cheap for me as it needs to be done in a garage, or atleast somewhere with a pit / ramp.

so im looking at havin to take it to a backstreet garage tomorrow morning :( any idea how much a new clutch will cost? and can anyone recommend any clutch-fitting garages in the chelmsford area?

Thanks again,

Thunder

Didn't realise you were there! lol

Ren-o-tec on the industrial estate near the Audi Dealership, not far the GSF, is probably the best place. He's pretty good :)

ahh thats like 2 mins away, awesome. is he quite cheap??
i'll give him a call in the morning, also gonna ring mr clutch and see how much they charge.

this is so depressing, the amount of effort i've put into getting my car ready for the lakeside meet, and now its decided to eat itself. sodding thing. lol

lol It's always the way!

He's not bad - cheaper than renault and is a renault specialist with like 24 years experience or something :)

He's not cash in hand cheap, no, but will be your best bet I reckon, unless you can find a mate with a garage :)
