Help! My Brothers got fairly big problem with his insurance

  e92 + E46 M3 + Cup
Well my younger brother passed his driving test today, So gongrats to him

But bad news follows.. Basically he went out practicing with our mum on his provisonal licence for a few months so they started a new policy as my mum has two cars & doesnt use the other untill a few months ago when they both got insured on her clio, so my brother was insured as a second driver on a provisonal licence.. so today he passed his test & told the insurance company that he now has a full licence & they now say the policy has gone up another £700 ( originally just under a £1k when on prov ) & that he has 10 days to pay it, so knowing this he is forced to cancel the policy as he cannot afford it & understands he will need to pay a cancel fee.. but oh no! they are demanding the £700 & the cancel fee! fooking cheek! so the question is where does he stand with out causeing problems on his credit rating?

Any help would be ace guys ;)

Thanks,
James

First of all.

His insurance is bound to go up as soon as he passes, he is going to be out on the road by himself or with friends ect more likely to be a accident in his first year.

secondly.

Your mum should be able to cancel the current policy straight away. (some companies will charge a fee) But there is no reason that she can not cancel it.

If you pay by direct debit the some times take the fee from this, but if you have paid for a full year you will be able to cancel and get the remaining money back.

Should not affect credit rating because he has not used the full policy time so is entitled to a refund of part of it.

thirdly

now he has passed he should really insure the car under his own name it may be more expensive but NCB ect in the long run

Thats what i thought.... seems its not the case, mum spoke to the manager & he said the same - t***s:mad:, so what should she say to them? Insurance companys take the piss :dapprove:

it will say in the policy wording but if they are a decent well known insurer then they cannot demand you to pay the full £700

he will have to pay a cancellation fee as per normal...but they cannot demand an unreasonable cancellation fee

oh and if i were him i would set up my own policy

Who is the company? pm me if you would prefer

" now my son has passed and you are being unreasonable with you cover, we have sold this car, and bought him a smaller car of his own, so no longer need the cover on this car."
"Ok i will cancel it, you will get XXX paid back in to you account on XXdate"
"Good"
"Anything else i can help you with?"
"can you give me a Quote for my son on (insert reg of the car he is using) please"

Dads an insurance manager, asked him and he says its a load of crap and refuse to pay.
What company is it?

Also i agree with the insuring in you own name from day 1, wish i had done it as i would have 2 years ncd now and would be in a 172.

Tell them to bugger off!

That's ridiculous!

They should offer a refund if more than 2 months insurance remaining, and then deduct a cancellation fee from that. Usually between £25-50 for cancellation I think. It should say in the policy handbook.

What insurance company is this with?

I'm with elephant and I got 20 quid back from them when I passed my test :S

S**t jamesy boy just cancel the policy you bro aint used the car since he has passed so he aint got to pay s**t. Also cancel any other polices your family has with them imagine if they had to pay ouy for a claim. I can see it now, Sorry sir we dont actually pay out for claims we just rape your A**e all year for money we only collect cash we never give it out. Let us know how it goes

No way do you have to pay for something you haven't used yet! You may not get a pro-rata refund on the remaining policy - cancel fees - but that's ridiculous.

Citizens Advice if you don't get anywhere with them.

id refuse to pay,
itll go to a debt recovery, and ull pay 50 a month for a while,
thats the worst case scenario,

should have read the fine print on ur contrat me thinks,
quinn direct have a habbit of offering rediculously cheap insrance for provisional drivers, and then raping them once they pass,

this will not affect your credit rating,
as credit rating is paying back BORROWED money,
car insruance payments are not in arears so there nothing to do with it.

Thanks for all the help guys, hopefully get this sorted as he should be driving around enjoying it rather than getting worried about these c***s taking the piss! will keep you all up-dated on the out come

Quinn Direct explains it all.

Have a habit of raping folk after they move to a full license and have heard stories of finding anything to get out of paying you if you have a bump. Shitty company

not unusual if you're paying instalments, I'd ask for clarification. They're probably asking for the balance of the credit, then will issue a refund. Dodgy way of doing it and there's no need for them to be idiots, but they try it on and people fall for it

Second thread in the last few days that people have said Quinn Direct are terrible for that, and yet mine only went up £50 for the year after passing, and then dropped by £200 with one years no claims. Incidentally my no claims was accrued partly whilst having insurance with my provisonal license.

Well my first year was with quinn, didn't charge anything when i passed but this was arranged when we took out the insurance. Change of car to the clio didnt cost a thing, friendly staff but got a stupidly cheap quote from more than so moved to them.
