help needed asap.............

the car has been stood without starting or being driven for around 2-3 weeks. the battery was totally flat to the point of no central locking etc,

i charged this until i could start the car yesturday, i then went for a drive to blow the cobwebs out, the cars was used 2 other times yesturday aswell (not long journeys)

this morning i have nothing again, i have put the battery on charge again so that may help.

diagnosis? alternator?

I'd say battery fcuked. They don't like running down then being charged up again.

I can't think what the proper terminology is but long term trickle-drain, where something like an immobiliser drains the battery slowly, can kill batteries

And a 'normal' charger that just whacks 12v or whatever into it to charge it doesn't work well as it needs to be gently charged up bit by bit before being properly charged.

You can buy a 'proper' charger for a bit of cash but it might just be simpler to buy a new battery lol

Is it garaged? Might be worth getting a new battery and just trickle charging it if it's stood for a while!

Or have a search of the TalkAudio forums as chargers have definitely been discussed and recommendations made

everyone seems to think its the battery so

its not garaged so thats not an option, i have my mechanic on the way oner now anyway so we will go at it then

My dad has got a 'proper' charger, its brilliant, rescued a couple of old batteries that I thought were buggered.

He uses it on his bike, plugs it in every day when he gets home from work, then takes it off before driving away (obviously)

Its mainly for bike batteries, but does car ones just as good, its called a 'Datatool' just look on ebay for them.

if the car sits for a long time you could buy a trickle charger (after you buy a new battery). When you park her up for a few weeks, connect this up and it will send a small amount of charge to the battery just to keep it topped up. Prob get one for about a tenner.

If a battery is left for a length of time that makes it go flat it will never keep its charge again. If you have started it just as it was going flat you could have saved it. It need a new battery mate then it will be as good as new.

BTW some trickle charges can over charge battery's if you leave them on permanently

I got mine from what I thought would be the most expensive place. It's opposite Renault in Exeter, a tyre and exhaust place. They sell expensive wheel and tyre packages and do fancy wheel alignment type stuff. I was there finding out the price for PE2s and just happened to ask about batteries. £25 for an 063 size battery with three years warranty!
