Help: Sandblasting Alloys

  Was a Clio 1.8 16v

Original phase 2s apprently need this done to stop tyre pressure slowly falling. Who actually can do this work?

Some garages have told me WHEELBASE, so rang them & they said they dont do it & didnt seem to know anything about it. Any1 know anything?

get a tyre fitting company to put bead seal on the wheels that will stop it, calibra 16v wheels are prone to problems with laquer and the bead sealin on the rim, one of the guys at work had one, we used bead seal on it and hes had no probs since

Car body shops sometimes have sand blasting machines, worth phoning around. Or Put the spare wheel on and take the alloy down to a tyre place and get them to take the tyre off for you and you can wire brush around the inside rim to get all the flakey paint off then that bead sealer they use is more likely to last the life of the tyres.

3 of them have this prob! Ill ring some bodyshops then but im gutted about spending money on repairs as ill have to wait till pay day before i can order my coilovers now! :(

Sanblasting costs me about 10 quid a wheel.

But to get the inner rim like you want youll have to take the tyres off, might as well get them repained at the same time.

I only want the inner rim sandblasted so it will have air-tight seal so it wont make a difference to the way the wheel looks from the out-side.

I cant find any bodyshops thatll do them!

Need an engineering company to do them then get them laquared then tyres re-fitted. BLAGGG!

Any 1 know a bodyshop or place where i can get them done with-out having to go to a tyre fitting centre, then an engeneering company, then a bodyshop, then back to the tyre fitting place in Manchester?

Best thing to do is to get the tyre taken off, buy one off those wire brush attachments for a drill and go over the inner rim taking off all the loose paint and rust untill you get down to clean bare aluminium, but be careful not to push to hard as the alloy is soft and easily damaged. This will stop your tyres slowly deflating.

So all it is i have to do is smooth the inner rim?

Looks like ill have to DIY with the wire brush idea soon as no1 can do it.

Ill then have to get them laquared, & tyres fitted. BLAGGGG!

OK; taken on some advice and im gonna try and clean the inner beed seal myself with a wire brush however on my last Clio with steel rims i think the beed line had corroded hence being unable to repair, although all my 16v original alloys have this problem so i doubt that this has happened to all the wheels.

After that i will get the tyres re-fitted with tyre sealant. Hopefully itll be problem solved. Any help, info or tips? Thanx

Right i might be able to get my alloys re-furbished on the cheap so was just wondering if this e-mail i recieved is true & the problem will be solved, Hurray!

When we refurbish a wheel we blast it back to bare metal and then
powder
coat paint it which forms a complete seal around the wheel. It is not
the
blasting that cures the problem but the paint. You could try removing
any
corrosion with a wire brush and then using some kind of mastic sealant,
but
we have no real experience of doing this.

Andrew

Cheers, Mikey.

well, thats generally what happens, but thats not real refurbing, its just getting the old cack off, youll just have paint over any imperfections. I would rather get them smoothed to look like new.

How much r new phase 2 alloys from Reno cause if there around £60 each then itll be better to jus get a new set?

But there probably nearer £100 each, right?

tyres off (cant do this yourself) wire brush to remove the flaky paint, and a lick of beal sealant if really bad corrosions of the aluminium, omne will not work without the other, expect to pay £5-£10 a wheel at a local independant tyre place, cheaper if its a cash in the back pocket job.

i reckon ive done 300-500 its a 3 minute job but ned the specific machien to pop the tyre off the rim, but can easily be re-seated.

big deal made of a very simple problem, youve been mislead! sandblasting and powder coating with repaint is a cosmetic thing mainly and expect to pay £30-£40 a wheel inc everything

Great, so its the flaky paint thats causing it? So when they get re-conditioned itll be power coated and laquered; problem solved?

Beal sealant; what is it, is it easirly available, is it like paint or putty, hows it applied? Thanx, Mikey.
