help SPEEDO CABLE

the cable that connects the speedometer and mileage clocks to the gear box. I need to change this as my valver is idleing high but havent got a clue where to start.

I have the dash off and the panels out and have unplugged the cable but cant work out where it leads to in the engine bay. Any directions and even pictures (as i am useless at this sort of thing) would be greatly appreciated.

Do i need to get under the car?

If the valver is ideling high, surely you just need to adjust the idle speed?

Its the accelerator calbe to controls how fast it idles. If the dials are giving dodgy readings, then the revs are nothign to do wiht the speedo cable.

Cant undestand why you would need to change this?

This is what I have been informed. When I unscrewed the dials the speedo cable has disconnected from the engine so I will to get doen there regardless.

Its because of the road speed sensor attached to the speedo cable.

To remove cable, just disconnect from back of clocks, thread back behind middle of dash, undo at gearbox end, remove plastic clip, then pull through into car.

The ECU gets speed info from the hall sender on the speedo cable. IF the speed info is incorrect the engines anti-stall programs mess up and it provide an idle that is too high almost all of the time.

The accelerator cable doesnt control idle at all since its always closed.

it uses the speedo cable sensor to pick up the idle just as your about to stop to prevent the engine stalling. eg-if you were on the brakes at the time etc then there is the chance the engine could stall.

Where is the actual speedo cable sensor then?. I thought the cable just went from box to clocks?, what is the sensor?, the cable is a mechanical drive so where does this sensor thing come in?.

the sensor is part of the cable and is just before where it plugs into the instrument panel. the centre cable will have a target on it that the sensor on the outer casing picks up.

ok just to update this post in case anyone is doing a search in future. The speedo cable is now changed and the high idling has stopped.

Yippee

If you have this problem after reaching high speeds and then getting a high idle problem try changing the speedo cable.
