help, warning lights after steering wheel change.

  XC90, 330d, Trophy’s
Hi Guys.

being a little new to the world of Clio parts when removing them i thought i best ask after a little task i gave myself earlier.

i removed the steering wheel on our 182, with the cruise contol buttons.

did it the way i thought would be logical, disconnected the battery, came back 15 mins later and delicatly removed the airbag, unplugged 4 wirring connectors and then removed the wheel.

ive now fitted a Suede steering wheel on an OMP Boss.

the wirring that was supposed to come with the boss kit wasnt there, so its being forwarded to me over the coming few days.

now, 2 of the pugs are self explanitary, they plug in the top and bottom of the centre airbag module, so i could understand that the airbag light was going to be on before i even finished putting it back together.

my hiccup, is the 2 plugs in the folowing picture.
i can only assume one is for the horn and the other for cruise control buttons
But.... on starting the car back up, after the battery reconnection i was greated with the obvious airbag light, the sevice light and the triangle orange light with what would appear to be a car sliding out of control.

my question, would these 2 plugs cause those lights to be on, or has something else gone amiss somehow?

cheers for any help.

triangle one is from cruise control button being disconnected IIRC serv and airbag are for airbag being disconnected. You wont get a light for horn

  GW 200 Gone :( BG182
The triangle one sounds like the esp, check the steering angle sensor is properly aligned behind the wheel :)

+1 - Bang On!

Steering Angle is calculated from the steering column angle and would only trigger the ESP/ABS + SERV lights if the clockring itself had a comms issue (Or if hte actual steering angle sensor had been tampered with to make it show +/-7 degrees at the rest position)

Any chance you could break that down into laymans terms please buddy.
There was the black ring with 4 different wiring connectors coming off of it.
What would I need to align those to?

Steering wheel boss could only fit in one place due to the way the splines were laid out.

The steering angle sensor is a rotary switch totally separate to the steering column as its built in to the steering wheel comms unit (That's the bit that has all the control stalks on it). If you've knocked this out of alignment it will cause issues which is why the SAS Comms units normally have a huge cross inprinted in them and a drawing explaining that you shouldn't ever alter the steering angle with the wheel removed.

ABS being on will also be connected to the issue - want me to come out and take a look for you? Okay, I'm probably a bit far off but the offer is there. Ideally you need it plugging in I'm afraid to see exactly what is triggering the MIL's and go from there as I can guess all day long... Sorry i can't be of any real use to you.

Mick, thanks buddy.

the thing is, that black circle bit with the plug leads spins around anyway, as soon as i took the origonal steering wheel off it slipped around.
and it can only go back in one place due to the hole in the boss and the way the boss fits due to the splines thru the shaft centre.

or am i way off the plot with my thoughts?

Its been a while since i'mve played with a Clio II SAS but I happen to have a Megane II unit right here so gimme a sec and i'll upload some pictures of it.

Okay, the photos are of a Megane II setup, NOT a Clio II but it is a similar setup:

Steering Angle Sensor - "Zeroed"

NOTE: The "0" is dead central in the aperture

Steering Angle Sensor - "Turning Left"

Steering Angle Sensor - "Turning Right"

If you've set the wheel straight on the column but the SAS is not correctly "Zeroed" it will know the SAS is mis-configured or incorrectly set. The SAS can rotate freely with the steering wheel off so its essential you are 100% sure the SAS hasn't been disturbed before replacing the wheel as the ESP program is rather sophisticated and can tell when the slightest thing is wrong with the angles.
