Help with best transmission on a turbo clio

Hi guys,

Just bought a 1998 s - reg clio 1.4 RT 16v 5 speed manual...

I also have a volvo 1.7 turbo lump to fit into it, now I'm having troubles with what gear box to use as the donar car that gave me the turbo lump was a automatic.. So i can't even use the fly wheel as it is shaped to take the torque converter on the auto box...

My first idea was to use the renault clio's gear box for time being and i was also hoping i could use the fly wheel and clutch? Is this possible ?

One main concern is, if i use the clio's fly wheel will the crank sensor on the volvo engine work with the clio fly wheel, just it might have a different tooth arrangement thus causing it to pick up a incorrect signal and then it wont run... ?

Any of you guys shed some light in this please... :dapprove:

I would personally try and get hold of a 480 Turbo bottom end ( F*N Renault 1721cc based ) with flywheel and clutch that has come off a 5 speed manual car - im pretty sure the crankshaft is different on the Auto version. This will also solve your TDC sensor issue. The 480 turbo uses the M59 gearbox ( 5 speed manual ) which is very similar to a JC5 renault box - an upgrade to one of these ( JC5 129 / 130 ) would prove to be a wiser choice if your gonna increase power. The JB3 gearbox also fits the volvo lump.

If the box off your 1.4 RT is a JB3 you can use that although there not really built for that kind of power. Driveshafts will obviously fit. The Clio RSi gearbox ( JB3 078 ) is a good box and there cheap - you can also use the driveshafts off the same model.

Hmmm.... Are you sure there is a difference in the crank, i really hope there isn't because i'm not buying another manual bottom end, i got this engine cheap and was going to have some cheap fun in a clio, if i have to start swapping around engines then I'm just gonna give up.. lol

Can any one else confirm that the auto's have a difference crank to the manuals, i can't see how they are different as both look the same and it's just a different flywheel I'm sure of it.... Got me worried now - any extra help guys would be great...

So really best to get a volvo manual gear box and fly wheel and clutch so my tdc sensor lines up...

On the other hand, if i was to use the gear box from a Clio RSi ( JB3 078 ) what fly wheel and sensor would i use... ?
