Help with HD TV buying

Looking at getting a new TV.

I really don't have much of a clue with regard to these and when looking online I have seen somewhat a trade off between resolution and contrast.

Some TV's have a better resolution, e.g 1600 vs 1080/1200 but a much lower contrast.

I am really looking to play my Xbox on it and HD DVD's etc. What should I be looking for? Which is the more important factor and the best compromise.

I am looking to spend £600 ( +/- ish) so to any wise crack who says get both and spend £3k on a 50" TV really won't be helping.

It is going to be a 37" that I am looking for of which seem to be well within budget.

Thanks Jamie.

Hi Jamie,

Contrast Ratio is what to look for when you know you'll be using the TV for gaming.

I came across this one: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/127838 looks like a good buy! a very respectable contrast ratio with a nice price tag!

We've had a few panasonics, I would highly recommend them :)

What size are u aiming for? resolution of 1080i/p ? or 720p ? Does the Xbox put out 1080p ? The above TV is 720p.

Well if I were to buy a new TV I would prefer to get a 1080. The Xbox does support 1080, as it was set on 1080 @ Currys when I had a look in town recently.

I have seen a LG TV which had a contrast of 5000:1, 1080p resolution and 40" for £650. I was told to stay above 8500:1 but as I say I'm not too up to speed with this.

Someone did recommend me a Samsung as they have a gaming option and really enhances it?
