Help with my Cup

Hey all, again apologies for being new and not knowing so much about my car, but thats what im coming on here to find out. The guy that part exchanged my cup didnt leave the handbook in it, and he is (apparently) going to send it to me, but as yet i dont have it. (not sure if that will answer any of my questions though)

Couple of questions for those in the know.

Firstly, i notice under full acceleration there is a little more give, it clicks then goes about another inch. What does this do, anything other than just give a bit more power?

Secondly, there is about a quarter inch of travel on the acclerator before anything starts to happen. Left me looking embarrased a couple of times so far as ive stalled at the lights, is this normal (the travel, not the stalling!)

Thirdly, When i turn in off the road onto my cobbled drive at slow speeds the back end squeaks like a mouse in a trap, is this normal?

Lastly, are 172s (&Cups) really meant to be this much fun, surely it should be illegal!

Hi Max,

Ill try and answer your questions as best as I can, being a fellow Cup owner!

1. Can you explain what you mean with the term give? Do you mean straight away after youve started it up, or after youve had it running for a while? 172s are notoriously groggy first thing until theyve had time to warm up. This often leads to a period where the car goes that extra inch in stages. My Cup does this if I need to make progress quickly from cold.

2. I think the pedal in mine is the same, very much unlike my first car. I wouldnt say its an inch, but ive often stalled at lights/roudnabouts. Not un-common. In Evo magazine (if I remember correctly), I think they said it was probably the car they have most stalled or something similar. Used to drive me absolutely potty but Ive mastered it now.

3. A little squeaking and rattling is not uncommon on these Renaults. Although might be worth pointing out to the dealer you got it from if it really annoys you.

As for the last owner leavin the manual etc out, thats annoying. There didnt seem to much difference between the normal clio one and the 172 one, so might just be worth hassling the dealer for a replacement.

1. I belive he is refering the the little black rubber bit under the accelerator pedal which clicks when you push your foot a little bit harder on the accelerator, apparently this was simplly to switch off cruise control, as your car wont have it, it doesnt do anything.

2. Dont have this prob, but I got a 172 so no throttle cable.

3. Symptoms of lesser build quality and stiff suspension. Get somebody in the back and have a listen to where its comming from.

Yes they should be illegal, but ssshhh dont tell anyone

Welcome ! Hope youre enjoying the cup as much as me (strange that Im thinking of getting rid of it). Its a great car, I often find myself trying not to go overboard on the gas pedal!

1. Got this too - I dont know if you get anymore power but if you mash the pedal to the floor it certainly goes.

2. Yup, got this too - just takes some time to get used too, although I still seem to stall it far more than any other car I drive.

3. Had a few bumps and sqeeks but I havent noticed that.

I have to say that there is a time lag (albeit a tiny one) in between my blipping the throttle and the engine revving. Is this a characteristic of drive by wire?

Cheers for all your replies guys. Im really pleased with the car i came from a fiat Bravo HGT which was a barge of a car, not to shabby in a straight line, but wallowed all over the place once you started changing direction. Im used to the stripped out squeakiness of the cup as well, as before the Bravo i had a Mk1 106 Rallye, which was pretty raw. It was one big rattle, but a whole lot of fun. The Cup is just a big step up from that. (IMO)

Is there a rear torsion bar in the back of the cup? There looks like some thing like that behind my rear seats, although it could also just be the seat hinge! I was thinking that might be whats causing my back end to squeak like mad.

The chap before me fitted a scorpion exhaust and K&N, and it sounds flipping awesome. It also acts as a liecence saver as above 90 on the motorway it starts to get a little loud!

All in all i am extremely pleased with it.

if im not concentrating i stall mine, its well easy to do. Especially when doing maneovers on full lock, you have to give it that bit more right foot. I stall my brothers megane all the time when i hit full lock.

the big thing in the boot is a luggage net rail, remove this, itll save you even more weight, its completely useless unless youve got the luggage net, most people dont as the dealers forget to give it to them

As far as I know, as well as having clips for the luggage nets and baby seats, its also a lower rear rollbar. I wouldnt remove it myself...

rhys - all it is for is a luggage rail, no more

i removed mine and never had any issues, roamer removed his (think he still has it removed) and to my knowledge has had no problems, and id guess a couple more to boot

if you look at the structural design of it, only the plastic housing stretches the length of the boot, the metal base ends about 1" short of the boot sidewalls, so in effect has no structural benefits

Might have a look at removing it then. Hell, im never gonna put in any shopping, it would make it too heavy!!

I am seriously looking forward to some dry weather, since ive had it, about 3 weeks, its never been totally dry! Its been good getting to know it in the wet, and it does behave very well, i was surprised.
