Help with speakers/new tv

Alright basically i have just got a new TV and connected my surround sound system to it. I have it connected via optical cable and it works fine on DTV but on sky or analogue TV there is no sound coming out. It also works fine through HDMI on my xbox.

Anyone any ideas?

Guessing you have got the optical cable from your TV to the surround sound system then? There are different ways of doing things but personally i just plug the optical cable into whatever i am using, sky, ps3, xbox etc, you can get optical switches now which would make it easier. There are probably ways of doing it without messing about swapping cables and switches but thats how i do it.
