Heres one for you all, Headlamp washers and MOT's

  172
right i want a debate and some facts.

Ive got a new bumper in a bodyshop at the mo that is also an MOT station.

The cars booked in for a wing respraying, a fancy boot which will be revealed on here at some point and the bumper painting on tues.

Ive been wanting to lose the headlamp washers to follow my clean look and was speaking to the MOT tester, I asked him about the law regarding those washers and he said they are not part of the MOT test if they arent fitted.

Regardless of Xenons on not. I have also asked another garage before i MOT'd it a few weeks ago and he also said the same stating if they are not there they wont be looked at.

So ive told them to flush over the holes completely so itll be smooth, i have just MOT'd it anyway so they wont present a problem and having 2 seperate MOT stations say the same thing gave me enough confidence to do so.

Now, this is going to open a can of worms but i want HARD evidence that those two garages are wrong, i am completely happy with them been removed but loads on here state they need to be fitted.

Well i want proof. Discuss.....

well said that man. I found this out aswell last month. basically if a car is doesn't have a particular item fitted, it won't be checked for or tested.(apart from emissions ie cat)

i was under the impression, that if it was fitted OEM (regardless of whether you remove it or not), it should be checked for presence and operation on the MOT??

however, you would need a very pedantic MOT tester to look for it

this is the point, everyone on here says if they are fitted they cant be removed, but i think its a load of nonsense, if im having them removed professionally and the garage thats doing said they wouldnt test for them if they wasnt fitted means its fine.

ill post up some pics when they are done, plus im sick of the passenger side leaking, and when i spray them it squirts right over the car and spoils it when ive just waxed it. :)

In the bin they go....

If the MOT station is doin the work for you that zero chance they'll fail your car!

if you do get rid of them how would you stop the water pump pumping?

from what i have read, if the xenons are factory fitted then they have to have the washers fitted, which they will have when they come out of the factory. if the xenons are added to a car after it has left the factory then washers do not have to be added

Yes the MOT station is part of the same garage, but its already been MOT'd last week, ill take it back here tho now in future.

Havent thought about that yet, suppose ill cut the tube back to the washer bottle and plug it up.

as most on here say, jamies passed with xenons and no washers. Im sure a MOT tester wouldnt be looking up the model spec list to see what should be fitted, if they did they need to get a life, lol.

yeah i rekon if they spotted holes where they should be then they would question it but if there are no signs of where the washers should go then they probably wont even think twice about it :D

btw russ u should pop down on sunday afternoon if your about as me and chris are having a mini meet, i think jamies coming and a few other once we sort a time and place

yes as mentioned already , its to do with parts not being there to be tested .

like seatbelts , spare tyres etc , it wont fail if they aren't there to be tested

If it's fitted then it needs to be working. Someone broke my passenger side wing mirror two days before my car was going in for an MOT, about a year ago now. I just removed it completely and it didn't fail.

My 172 passed its MOT with one of the washers smashed in half. That was at a renault main dealer.

I spoke to my MOT place last week (up in Horsforth) just before fitting my xenons and he said too that the MOT doesn't look for the washer jets and it's fine to fit them! :D

Headlamp washers jets are not part of the mot, doesnt matter if the dont work, just like front fog lights etc!

If a car is manufactured with Xenons then it has to have washers when it is manufactured, but once the car is on the road they can be removed, and it isn't part of the MOT to check for them if they arn't there.

its like my car with ABS, it left the factory with it fitted and working

to go through the MOT it HAS to be as it left the factory, BUT i can COMPLETLEY remove it and pass, thats from VOSA
