High RPM Whine from engine?

  Evo
As title suggests i've developed a very concerning whine at high rpm from the engine, loudest on heavy throttle and particulary when rolling back down the gear from above 6000rpm. At low speeds and cruising theres no noise.

Aux belt is new, tension is fine, all pulleys are smooth and quiet to spin with no play in them too. Possibly an air leak from somewhere, but sounds more like a sucking noise so vacuum leak?

Car is a 2000 Ph1 with removed aircon.

My aux belt whines quite noticeably before and after replacement, been doing it for 20k now. If it is the aux belt it's quite common.

Hidden super charger, jokes aside mine does the same thing only in 2nd and 3rd though but not all the time i've just got used to it.

I get the same supercharger sounding noise when not in gear/in gear, kinda cool.. But not sure if SRS or something that can be ignored

It could be:

PAS pump
Aux belt kit idler
Alternator
Timing belt run

My bet is on one of the first two items rather than timing belt but its best it be seen to be confirmed/denied.

I also get this noise, had my aux belt kit changed and it's still there. It doesn't bother me too much yet, Ill go get it diagnosed properly when I get chance.

I have a feeling mine is the PAS pump though. Hopefully not the timing belt

Just had my alt belt/timing belt/dephaser all done at RenTec.

I have a feeling it might be the alternator then due to the fact I am getting the Batt/Stop light flickering now and again and other little bits.

Going to start with the wiring just for cheapness and just in case its only that.

If it does it not in gear, then you could always try quickly whipping off the aux belt and see if it still does it, at least then you narrow it down.
Dont drive it like that though as the aux belt spins the water pump too not just the alternator and PAS pump.

How did you remove the aircon? Cup setup? Pure? Home made?

Belt's not too tight is it? Mine was whining, was slightly too tight so slackened it off slightly. Easy enough to do on the cup setup

Yes thats a good point, iof its on a cup or pure setup seeing as it isnt an auto tensioner, those sort of silly mistakes are easy to make, if the aircon delete was one of the ones with a different idler pulley but still the auto tensioner though it should be an issue

Pure motorsport, its definately not too tight. Think it may be a gearbox issue as the gearbox squeaks on tickover ( noise stops when depessing clutch ).

As above checked everything and it all looks good so just gonna live with it.

It's it's squeaking whilst ticking over, then going when you depress the clutch though? Twas only a suggestion. Mine made some funny noises on the ph1 before it gave up is all.

  Evo
Release bearing sits idle on shaft when the clutch is engaged? ( Ie not spinning ) but when its depressed it releases the gearbox from rotation so any faulty bearing stops spinning and the noise goes away lol?

I reckon its new gearbox, clutch and driveshaft time :p

I still reckon it might be too tight.

Release bearing is such a definitive noise though, you'd know if it was that tbh. I would, and I'm a div.

What I love about you Danny, never any advice just shoot you down criticism lol.

Belts defo not too tight scope, if anything I've got it a little looser than preferred just to be sure.

Reckoning it could be the alternator as there's small resistance and grinding if I spin with the belt off. Water pump and PAS seem smooth.

tried that for a year. You didn't listen ;)

no point in giving advice when it's already been given correctly, but I'll repeat it. If the noise goes when you put the clutch pedal down, it's the release bearing

echo what dan's just said... release bearing rattles when your not on the clutch but soon as you PRESS the clutch in it stops... had it on my VTS which is renowned for clutch release bearings so yes you were incorrect

Used to listen to your advice, somewhere along the line though we seem to have fallen out. The forums no such place to discuss that though...

@ Danny/Mitch: I see what you mean but back to original problem I fail to see how it'd make a high pitched whine at high rpm. This is definitely a rotating part at fault, you'd have to hear it to understand why I know that. Unless the box is at fault and it's that whining down, it is noisy in 5th bit fluids fresh and correct and the problem seemed to come on overnight almost.
