high-temp Gearbox Oil

  Clio 182 RB
Is there any high-temp geaxbox oil any one could recomend....having trouble coming from 2nd-3rd its crunches....not all the time but only when im having a play with other cars, think the oil might be getting to hot?? cheers

  BMW M135i
3rd gear syncro is worn/wearing, common thing when the boxes aren't treated too well.

Oil change might help make sure to stick with standard 75w80 and do not deviate, may or may not improve it.

you can go upto a 75W90, but as has been mentioned the damage is already done, stop whacking it through the gears and be a bit more gentle to the box, they're fragile and don't like being rushed

french Sh*t,why put so much power in a car when the gearbox cant even handle it!...it dont do it all the time just...sometime when pushing it abit

  Lionel Richie
it can take the power, it just doesn't like being walloped through the gears on traffic light grandprixs! heal and toe seems to help the boxes last longer too

+1 with fred.

I've had 3 and neither one of them has been driven "kindly" and none of the gearboxes deteriotated on me at all. Heal and toe double declutched shifts for high rpm downchanges goes a long way. Once I got used to doing it it just became automatic.

  Lionel Richie
the linkage doesn't really help matters either, they flex (and snap in some cases) and the selectors are made from rubber

  Lionel Richie
when slowing down from high rpm you brake with your big toe, blip the throttle with the little toe and down shift, you basically match the engine rpm to the box rpm of the lower gear = smooth seamless downshift

compared to the average person's down shift of clutch in, down a gear, clutch up = MASSIVE JERK = stress on the box etc etc

hard to explain, google and youtube

  rps13
my box has actually become smoother since i started downshifting properly, almost like it's repaired itself.

sounds sooooooo much better blipping the throttle to drop a gear too!

  RS RIP
^^ i was actually trying to brake with the heel while blipping throttle with the toes... :D
i was wondering why this did'nt really work for me. Almost had my face on the dash

It's nice to master this move because it does save the box . I'll be trying again

if you suck at heel toe-ing then just brake,

let off the brake/blip & shift

then back on the brakes!!!

edit- i do not advocate this as a geniune method of downshifting, just a bit of fun when you're on your own.

yeh this is the way i've always done it, only i want to be able to do the real heal-toe thing

Lol, has anyone actually had a read of the Renault Manual that came with the Cliosport?..I was reading it the other day as I was very bored. There is a section in it that actually says Blipping the throttle when shifting has no benefit to the gear box as it incorporates synchros. Basically its a waste of time on a synchro box because it does not benefit the synchros in any way, the best gear change technique for a synchro box is just a smooth steady gear change. Synchro boxes are sometimes called slow change boxes for that very reason.

ok my mistake it doesnt actually mention the synchro specifically. It simply says Double declutching are superfluous actions in modern cars. page 2.07, last paragraph of the driving section.

hahah good find !! well i do''nt have to practice then i guess + just forget about it :D

***edit*** double declutching is not really the same as the blipping the throttle ; keeping revs up to match the next gear is what it's about. Think the synchros will benefit i think

Apart from "heel and toe" and "Double declutching" are two entirely seperate techniques. The former is of great use on any synchro box to ease loads on the synchros and retain car balance during a downchange. The latter is used for boxes with no synchromesh i.e. crash type boxes to allow a smooth change by ensuring the speeds match for reengagement of the dogs.

In short if you can't heel and toe your missing out on a pretty huge aspect of driving!

sometimes I have a problem putting it into first, usually untill the car warms up a bit. IT's not that it won't go in, but you have to do a strange karate move to get it nudge.
Really anoyed me these last few days, the traffic light goes green and I'm in the car doing naughty moves with my hand, someone could think I'm playing :clown:

Normal characteristics of the car? :boring:;)

oh and btw, car's done 13.000 miles

I have the same problem as Adam we were discussing it last night.

One thing Adam forgot to put in...

We both experience the kind of crunch 2nd to 3rd after we have been driving hard for a few minutes NOT straight away.. for example i can do the same piece of road 5 times as it goes round in a loop, change at the same point everytime, but only after 5 - 6 times will it start to crunch slightly...

Surely this points to gearbox oil ?

Thanks

Oh and i constantly heel / toe etc

Nope not engine.. i could of driven the car for 2 hours, then decide to boot it etc, only after a few minutes of booting it will it start to do it... Surely that points to the oil ?

sounds like a presure loss thing . Fine in the beginning + along the way getting worse ?
Do gearboxes need some kind of pressure going on / oil pressure ?

Just brainstorming here

The gearbox on the Clio is splash lubricated - it's not an F1 car ;-)

It's going to be a weak synchro. The viscosity of the oil will change as it gets hotter leading to the problem being noticeable but the base cause is a weak synchro.

Stick some different oil in it and you might get it to go a bit longer, or just double declutch and not worry about synchros at all.

I find my gearbox is worse with double declutching, feels alot more notchy for some reason. I also had a play with two types of oil. One was Elf 75/90. The third gear seemed more stiff to get in on down change. All other gears ok, although 5th slightly heavier to put in. Changed the oil again to Castrol EPX 75/80 from opieopils, and the third gear synchro is smooth as ever, on both up and down changes, and the 5th gear is alot lighter to move. This is for both when hot and cold.

Im not arguing that this is oil related or syncho related, but from the oils ive used ive found the castrol 75/80 made a big difference in regards to changing gears.

bump :D

yeah that does happen, no idea as to why, but if you go into 2nd then into 1st that normally lets it slot straight in

Anyone explain the differnces between GL-4 and GL-5 , i've just realised i filled mine up with 75/80 gl4 and it should be gl5 .. ? maybe that could cause a problem ?

Thanks guys

Well when i'm slowing down for a corner when pressing on, i'll get on the brakes down on the clutch into neutral then a blip with my toe up to the right revs then in on the clutch and into gear and back off the clutch again before the revs drop. Slots into gear very sweetly and will be smooth back off the clutch as well unless your slow at it and let the revs drop. Been doing it in the 225 and the 172 before that, its a bit easier on the 225 with its stupid dual mass flywheel as the revs drop much more slowly.

What am I doing? Is this heal+toe or something else aswell?
