I’d get it sorted and keep it as it’ll be worth decent money.

or if not, sell it now with a dead engine. If it’s a nice shell you’ll prob still get ok money. Insurance will only shaft you for the next 5 years anyway. So it’s swings n roundabouts with price.

Rattling and knocking aren't the same thing. Top end with low oil pressure will tick/rattle. Bottom end will knock.

If the sump is just cracked, then I would put a tray under it, fill with cheap oil - start engine for a few moments and have a listen.

If the sump has a hole in it obvs don't do that.

If it was mine I would personally want to keep the original engine with the car as a low miles RB is getting very rare.... The last thing I would do it go through insurance at all.

^Probably the easiest/cheapest option. If it's good, great, if it rattles, it needed a sump anyway.

With that mileage get it looked at you never know it might not be toast, think hard before you contact the insurance as it’s worth a fair bit in good condition a 50k mileage 182 in average condition would be over £5k but the insurance company would see it as some old Clio and give you hardly anything unless you had some minimum payout agreement linked to its condition. A similar thing happened to a fiat coupe i owned. I ended up dropping a new engine in and literally keeping the car off the road for the time it took me to source the engine and get the work done equalled out with its growing popularity and increased price when I came to sell it, yet if it was a write off I would have take a huge hit.

Not sure you can trust the descriptions on CC nowadays, whenever you look stuff is often due belts or hasn't had the common problems sorted.

Knocked a hole in my sump last year on my daily. Couldn’t be arsed fixing it again so punted on marketplace to a chap who is fairly local. He patched the hole in the sump with JB weld and it’s still running 6m on.

another cup up on cc, remember seeing it for sale previously may have been on here, remember it due to the spec/quaiffe diff fitted. looks a nice one anyway with belts just done by a proper specialist. should make good money.

Depends on the car.

In this case an appreciating car with low miles in a good colour. Getting a payout (which will be less than market value) and having the car catagorised will mean the OP probably looses out financially in the longer term. So if he isn't keeping it then claim, if its a car he wants to keep for the long term I wouldn't.

This is why for my cars (two old Clios!) I pay the absolute minimum I can for insurance. I’ll never pay for any extras or try to find a particularly reputable insurer because I know that I’m unlikely to make a claim for my own car. Therefore, by paying for insurance, i’m just paying a fee to be able to legally drive on the road.

I got front ended 4 weeks ago by a little old lady who joined the roundabout on the wrong side of the road. It was a very low impact collision but its costing her insurance £3k to repair.
New bonnet, new front bumper, new offside headlight, new upper grill and 2 new arch liners. The only thing my body shop couldn't source were the 2 plastic impact absorbers behind the bumper. I sourced 2 good 2nd hand parts. Then prep and paint. The engineer who her insurance company use tried to get my body shop to knock the price down a bit but he stood his ground with the £3k estimate and they backed down
They didn't write mine off.

How on earth did your bodyshop find arch liners? One side is NLA and nigh on impossible to source?!

Apparently everything is available from France. I'm not 100% certain he's replacing both, I think he said he was but can't remember now if he said he was. I'll ask him next time I speak to him. He's definitely replacing the offside arch liner.

The insurance company aren't exactly about to buy a second hand engine off eBay and sling it in are they? Their only options would be to strip and repair the current engine, source a properly rebuilt one, or a crate engine.

None of those options are cheap, all involve a s**t load of extra labour and time and none would be viable for the insurance co.

Some might say it's not economical to repair. But I want my car repaired so it's going to be repaired. I've already had a courtesy car for 1 month which has probably cost the insurance company £3k before we even start talking about the cost of the repair.

I do agree with you but I am amazed they have agreed to repair it. The norm for damage like that is to write the car off.

The body shop I use. The guy is s**t hot when it comes to the legal side of insurance claims. Their engineer, from LV tried to knock him down on the price or the repair but he stood his ground and told them that's how much its gonna cost and in the end they agreed.
That's the difference I letting the insurance company handle who repairs your car and you telling them this is the body shop who I want to repair my car.
