How can I make my Williams faster

hi doods, Im new to this forum, but would like to know what tuning goodies I can put on my Willy (... might re-phrase that at some point...).

I have a full Magnex zorst with a 2.5" stainless exit, full induction... K&N I think... and an FSE power boost valve. I was looking into chipping it, but I hear this makes it difficult and expensive to service. Can these things be tuned to more power without modding?

My car had a S/S exhaust and k&n on when I got it, but since I have changed the k&n for a viper as most people agree open induction kit on a clio looses power. I also de-catted the car which helps the car to rev and had a chip installed at Hillpower, which raised rev limit to 7.5k. Chip only costs 150 fitted to members and is well worth it. I have no problems with service, just make sure the oil changed regular etc.

Got a manifold waiting to go on and more to come, power is addictive!

No have never had my car RRd. Most people on here think most Willys have more than 150 bhp as standard but surely this is affected by mileage? I wouldnt guess that my car has over 160 bhp.

Yours has only done 84k - there was someone on here with a Valver that had a higher milage and was putting in impressive figures.

Then again finding a reliable rolling road is impossible anyway.

Wouldnt mind comparing to a standard Williams, I think the difference would be noticeable might have to get off my ass and come to a meet etc sometime.

I took my williams 1 to a local roaling road, it has a superchip (revs to 7200) full magnex exhaust, and a k&N. they said it was 155bhp at the fly. have since put on decat, and improved the cold air feeds. Looking to have it tested again at a different rolling road.

is there anything else that can be done to the williams, that isnt too costly? can the engine be tuned much more?

Mine has done 78k and with a previous owner done 14.8 1/4 mile at santa pod. that was with the decat.

I think the chip/panel filer/de-cat are the cheapest mods.

After that I think its engine time.

If a moderator could move this to Power, Mechanical it would get a response.

Or do a search - there may be some stuff in the archives but they have been deleting stuff.

After chipping it gets expensive, exhaust manifold is 350 for a handfull of bhp and after that headwork and cams is 1.5k for about 20-25 bhp. Check out Hillpower.co.uk

When i bought the williams was told it had a tubular downpipe. call me stoooooopid but are we talking the exhaust below the manifold yea? not the manifold too?

i seem to be suffering from walleye vision

help

A standard Williams will make about 140bhp at the wheels - possibly more, maybe less. It usually equates to a fair bit more than 150bhp at the fly in any case. The main thing is that mileage is kind to the F7 engines and they seem to perform better as the miles pile up!

Probably the best single mod you can do to sharpen the power delivery a bit is a de-cat. Mind you, modifying a Williams is at best a sensitive undertaking.

My old 16V was quite modified, although tastefully and not externally. To be honest, "stepping down" into a standard Williams Im happier now to have a standard car and wouldnt burn money again on mods. To get real additional power you have to spend a lot and the intermediate bits often arent worth it IMO.

to be honest ur prolly right Ben. The mods it came with allows me to keep up with my m8s CTR, but I dont rate his driving to be honest. I heard a de-cat will make it fail MOTs on emissions anyway, which I deffo dont want. I think ill just save my cash and keep it for 3 years then get a Skyline, prolly works out cheaper to buy a faster car than mod it.

Thanks for the advice

btw what does a standard Williams do a 1/4 mile in?

(it is still tempting tho :) )

You put the cat back on for MOT it only takes 5 mins. Cant stop modding keep to the engine though, would lose quite a lot money if I sold the car so Im going to keep it and get it to mint conditon and make it a bit faster.

Williams quarter miles vary but book figures have it around 15.8.

depends whos williams it is lol

mine in absolutely bog standard trim ,std zorst filter and cat ...ran 15.3

with de-cat s/s zrst n panel filter it now runs 14.6, 14.7s all day

a good williams shud beat a 172 no problems really, the cups are a little bit more of a handful, speshally the rsport chipped ones........buggers;)

as for modding, cams can be got for £440, but then ul need verniers n chip poss bottom end rebuild to make sure lol

power can be xtracted from the engine if your willing to spend a bit n do a LOT urself lol

works out a damn site cheaper that way

headwork shud set u back £500 max, or even better go get urself a megane 2.0 head, a fanimold an sum throttle bodies, add this to head n cam work n uv got a serious machine for roughly £3k outlay

£3k!? ouch... Im no good at mechanics (based on the fact I aint tried) but how easy is it to take the cat off and put back on for MOTs? Is this something I can do or will I need specialist equipment n tools?

poss de-cat and chip after Xmas then maybe... still not sure on a) which chip is best all round and b) if it will cost more to service and if I will have to take it somewhere random. I live in the Manchester area if anyone can recommend a decent garage.

Thx for the advice guys

My Willy was slower than my Ragnotti around the ring but was actually quicker in some places, probably due to lighter weight and gearing differences.

The difference over 20km amounted to about 25 seconds, but with better tyres and newer dampers, the Willy would certainly have been a bit quicker.

The Willy had over 100,000 miles on the clock with the original dampers...

Mate fitting a decat is a piece of piss! the only really hard part is undoing the old bolts (there are 4 of them) after a few years the threads on the bolts corrode away making it impossible to undo with a couple of spanners, so the only practical way of getting the buggers off is either cutting them off with an angle grinder or warming the nuts up with a portable blowtorch and then unsrewing them off with a spanner

tools you will need:-

angle grinder (small 4 inch jobbie)

blow torch

can of wd40

wire brush

2 13mm spanners( have other sizes to hand as the nuts corrode away too making them smaller)

flat screwdriver

hammer

tube of fire putty(this is used to help seal the decat in place)

4 13mm nuts and bolts 1.5 inches long

once the old cat is off the decat will take you 10 minutes to fit!

take of the fse boost valve for starters, they are sh*t!!!! and get rid of the induction kit as they are good for about -5bhp with all the hot air they suck

I agree. A williams is the only car i am happy to drive standard. I hardly ever race other people. In a way the fun comes when youre on your own with no other cars around just throwing it round some corners. Drag racing does no justice to the williams. The high milage Williams i just bought (124000 miles) was RR at 120000 with 159 BHP at fly (completely standard with an old paper air filter in the box; which if new would probably allow slightly higher figures).

Nooooo!! Keep the FSE PBV on - granted you dont need it ATM but it wont be robbing you of any power and you will need it if you get cams etc.

As said, loose the open induction kit - get a hold of a standard airbox and put a replacement element in it and this should sort any breathing your likely to need. If this doesnt give you back a satisfactory power output, get and chip and de-cat....

Think Ill retract my comment about having 7.5k limiter on my car as well, god knows where I got that from it was only 6.9k!
