how can i tell if the car has got cams or not ?

  RS RIP
Right, i bought this car off someone who said he thought the car might have slightly wilder cams in there... he was'nt sure

How can i tell if the car has had cams done ?? (without tearing it apart )

The idle is rough, and it pulls like a train from down below. The renault mechanic said it's exceptionally quick as have other people who could know.. It does'nt really have the 5k kick.

The car history/maintenancepaper has stamps from the garages in France where it was maintenanced, but i have no records of Cams being done ; only driveshafts and powersteering-stuff can be found in there.

Soon i have to have the cambelt done; i do'nt want to make the mistake and put the wrong belt on there (in the case it does have wilder cams)

Help anyone ?

:)o next time no more import-car for me)

Standard belt should be fine.

Dont know of anyone uprating their cam belt when having wilder cams. Can you even buy a uprated one ...

take of the oil filler cap and look at the cam lobe. OEM cams have the lobes interference fit onto a seperate shaft where aftermarket cams are all from a solid blank.

You have taken the oil filler cap off, and you are looking down through the hole at one of the cam lobes. If its an aftermarket camshaft the lobe and the shaft are one piece of metal. If its a standard camshaft the lobe has been ground from a separate piece of metal and fitted onto the shaft.

Great , many thanks people !

Is it true there are different camkits available then or is it not neccescary ?

my main concern would be that Reno accidentally fits the wrong one when it's time to change

when they dont know about the cams/what kind are in there they might ?
dosnt matter what cams you have, the belts are all the same..
think about it, if that were true even if it had standard cams why would you spend hours stripping down an engine to fit an inferior quality belt when you could get a better one that will save the thing snapping before its time and bending valves

OEM belts are manufactured by gates, just stick to that.

There are 2 diff belt kits yes, but the only diff is 1 idler, and one kit will not fit the other.

do you mean the cam timing franx? that could be set up differently if you do have aftermarket cams, and then i guess it would be possible for renault to "incorrectly" set the standard timings.

i was'nt exactly thinking timing no, but you've got a point there..

no i was actually thinking difference in strength... right, good to know that this dooes not matter !

Yes i've read about adjustable cam pulleys , this must be the other/timing thing you mean Dr House-r :)

Dug up my old thread to notstart another one ;

Just called the specialist who is doing the cambelt/cam change service and guess what; He had it all open to change the cams + inlets etc. and he said the head has been worked on/ported already by previous owner..

I always suspected something had already been done to the car because it ran so fast , previous owner did'nt inform me , the prick.

Now i am having pretty wild Colombo & Bariani cams put in there; anybody know if the headwork will give clearance problems/any sort of problems with the new cams i ordered without knowing about the head ?

I'm basing that on what he just told me. The best man is a Renault specialist who's had his shop doing all kind of Renault sports since '78 . I would'nt know how it looks/what to look for..

He also told me not to worry (cam-job wise) when i was on the phone like this ; "ohhh no"

This was more my reaction to buying a tuned car of which i thought was a virgin.

Why is the previous owner a prick for not telling you?

because after pretty much talking + asking about all of it he is really supposed to tell me.

You ca'nt ask as much money when selling modded cars; at least here you do'nt
