basically i have a sub that i suspect is knackered and iv been told if i hook it up 2 an amp i risk blowign the amp also, so how can i check the amp? i am an electrician so i have a mega tester (continuity, insualtion resistance) so cna any1 tell me how 2 check if it is good?

Post it three times, it might work better ;)

* I think you can get some sort cd that tests it but other than that not sure :S

i cant connect it mate, i am talkign doing a test on it, my local pioneer centre todl em he wantes 15 quid to test it! cheeky b*****d! i have all the testers i shud need i think but ijuts dnt no wat test 2 do or what readings i shud get!

what gives you the impression its blown?

A general rule off the thumb is push the centre of the cone in (you MUST push in straight! IF there is resistance, and a scraping sound you have blown the voicecoils. Make sure you push it in straight, if you push in at an angle, you will get this scraping noise even on a brand new sub.

This could have been caused by sending a clipped signal to the sub/too much power/gains not set right etc etc.

That is just a rule however, dont take it as gospel, I've blow nsubs and they have felt fine, on the flipside ive had perfectly good working subs scrape when pushed in, but on the whole, scraping = fucked.

^ ok ill try that, i think i hooked it up 2 a fucked amp or i bought it blown, not sure really coz i got a diff amp and still no sound! does any1 here know if i should get continuity bewteen the negative and positive on the sub?

as crazy said thats the easyest way to test a sub,
depends what sub it is it can possibly be re coned but thats a big job, and only for expensive subs

If you just need to see whether it works at all you can use an AA battery. Connect the sub's leads to bothe ends of the battery and you should see the speaker push out one time.
Excuse me if I've missed the point of your question completely :S, just thought i'd share my method of testing for duff speakers.

ok this is the update: i was workign with an audio visual bloke in a house 2day and he told me that the rated impedence (ohms) shud b stated on the back so i went ot my car and checked ti said 4ohms then i did a test on it with my testers and got a reading of 3.00ohms, so it is 1 ohm lower then it shud b but i am sure that this isnt fucked rite? if it was fuked it wud b a very lower resistance, soemthing like 0.1 ohms?

^^^ also dave01_uk wen i did the test the speaker pumped once wen i connected the tester (obviously a low voltage went through it)

so can any1 else shed any light on this? also another thign is that the AV guy said that the amp sounds fucked as it goes 2 protection with no load btu said as it is turning on it obviously isnt completely fucked and he reckons that it is possible for companys to check whats rogn and possibly fix a component?

if they were from big companys you could send it back for testing, but id say it wasnt worth it, just buy new

come on now being an electrician you should know the difference between resistance and impeadance

but yeah if the amp goes into protection with no load connected it's probably fucked

but is it possible 2 fix it?

  Polo + Micra
might be able to

take it apart and find out what looks busted(if it's out of warranty)

impeadence is the totality measured in ohms of all electrical opposition of current flow which covers resistance, reactance, capacitance aswell as any other mechanical factors that inhibit the completion of energy transfer so technically speaking impeadence is resistance;)
