****how do bodyshops prep****

  172 M69 eater

i was wondering earlier, i was gonna take my valver wings to a bodyshop to get em done well, jus i wanted to sand em down myself to save a bit of dough. Is this easy to do, obviosuly sanding is pretty easy, but what grade of sandpaper will i need, and will there be anything else ill need as well?

thanks

patty!

to be honest mate unless you know what you are doing its better to leave it to the pros or youll end up paying more for them to fix what youve f**ked up and then start painting

u wannt get some 1200 / 1500 and do a wet dry job on ya wings, u cud prime them ur self as well, no skill in puttin primer on.. just slap it on and then sand it down so its very smooth using 1200/1500 paper.

its rather easy once u got goin like, but for what its worth may as well get the bodyshop to do it. for 2 wings lookin bout 100/150 max, if that,

when i had my mk2 vw golf, i got my bonnet, and front and rear bumpers sprayed only cost me 90quid

be warned that 90% of the finish is the preparation!

if u dont get the prep perfect then all those little imperfections you left which u cudnt see will show up really niely once the paint goes on :p

you have been warned :D

sand em down with 1500.....??? does that mean youll start sanding em down on the tuesday & theyll be ready for painting on the following tuesday !!? presuming you do 3 hours of sanding every night !!!!

there is some (agreed not alot) skill to putting primer on....the last thing you want is low & high spots caused by heavy/light handed spray work

is your car a metalic or solid colour ??

dont bother with the 1500, as our good fatherted says if you wanna spend all night by all means..

Use 1200 wet and dry and use a soapy solution to sand down the primer, and unless you are sanding a bendy bit use a block so that the sanding is smooth.

my cars a solid white colour fatherted.... glacer white used on mark 1s

think it mite b easier to pay a lil bit extra!!!

yikes lol

right if its a new panel all u need to do is scotch it up with red scotch which is the equivilent to 800 paper. if they are already painted panels in good condition, then the same applies. red scotch or 800 paper, just to key up the surface so the paint takes to it, the scotch will take the shone off the laquer or colour layer depending on wether the paint is striaght or metalic.

are the wings goin the same colour or a different one? if there going a different colour then they will need priming but bear in mind if u prime them and then the paint reacts with the primer its your fault, as the bodyshop have done what you have asked.

if u do chose to prime it u could well be wasting your time, if the panels are in good condition then the bodyshop may choose to go wet on wet meaning the primer goes on and as soon as its reasonable dry on goes the colour.

u only need to prime a panel to get it ready for painting. if the surface is ready theres no need to prime it and wetflat it with 800 as your effectively just making another surface as ready as the one underneath

Im pretty sure that most spray painters would turn their noses up at a self-prepped car, unless you have skills in this area.

More than likely they will have to give everything the once over anyway, just to be sure it has been done right, or else they will refuse to be held responsible for how the job turns out!

patty its in chertsey which is junc 11 of the m25, i dont work thier anymore but still know the boys down there

as said b4 most sprayers hate paintin things they havent preped as 80% of the finish is in the prep, reflects badly on them if the finish aint as it should be
