How do I know if the belts are done?

  LY 182
Okay bit of a random one.

I got my LY off a member here. (Link: http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=503852)

They state the belts were done in 2008 but looking through the service history I can't find anything that actually confirms this.

I've left the previous owner a txt asking, as they were very helpful and friendly at the time. I'm a bit worried about it now though..

Can you tell they have been done from looking at them?

No, and if you've not got a reciept then you should in theory get them done again.

BUT, it states Steve @R-sport cars had the work done. Send a PM to him, and i'm sure he'll sort you out the details of who did it and when..

  LY 182
I'm not sure it specifically states Steve did the work. Might mean he simply reminded them to include the detail in the advert as a selling point.

I've got the Maintenance Service book out. It's been serviced at 12k, 21k, 35k, 49k, 55k and 59k. (59k being in April this year).

I can't see anything else though. Nothing under accessories belt / pulleys.

I don't think Steve had anything to do with it but I could try it. Hoping I'll get a txt back from previous owner.

any specialists stamps?

Services are:

1st - Lookers Renault Chelmsford
2nd - Camden Motors Ltd
3rd - Renault Watford
4th - Renault Evans Halshaw
5th - Renault Evans Halshaw
6th - Renault Evans Halshaw

The 4th, 5th and 6th would have been done by previous owner I assume, as the stamp has S11 which is Sheffield post code I believe and that's where previous owner is located.

4th service was on 29/3/08 which is the only thing close to belts being done in April as per the ad.

Are there any receipts in the folder? My belts were done for which I had a receipt, but the garage never stamped the service book.

Not that I have found. I will have another thorough look after work though.

Hoping to get a response from the previous owner soon though she did say she was on holiday at some point this month.

I knew I'd forget to 100% check something when buying the car. I was too damn excited lol.

defo give Steve@R-Sport a shout mate, he may be able to send you a photocopy of the invoice or proof of it been done, very handy to have in your file

If a Renault dealer serviced it as per manufacturers spec, would the cambelt be done as part of the service when it reached the required age/mileage?

  LY 182
The belts need doing @ 36,000 miles or 5 years right? The 36k service was done March 2007 so wouldn't the belts have needed to be done then?

Not sure everything ties up. May have to just try both dealers if I don't get a response from previous owner.

They seemed genuine and an enthusiast so hopefully they could clarify things for me. Ideally I don't want to have to pay for the work having thought it was done.. Hmmm.

  LY 182
Ah okay. So it's at least logical that it could have been done April 08.

I'll just be patient and hope for a response from previous owner first. If nothing then I'll have to give the dealer a call I guess.

Its 5yrs or 72k miles for the belts but most recommend getting them done before this, circa 60k

Phone Renault and they will be able to bring your cars service history up on there screen and at least be able to tell you if they did the belts or not!!

Then i'd give Steve at R-sport a call and go from there

mine is marked down on page 17 of the maintainance service booklet under timing belt and accessories belt. I had it done in May and at first I thought why have they not marked it down in the service book, but when I looked properly I saw there was a seperate section for the belts on pg. 17

I just got a txt back this morning from Hayley as she's been on hols.

She said it was done by a friend of her's who is a mechanic and used all the Renault parts but it was done at trade price, out of hours and that's why it wasn't stamped in the book. Apparently she informed me about this at the time but I don't remember tbh, but then I may have just been overly excited about the car and not thought about it!

Not sure what I can do now. Without any actual evidence that they've been done I'm a bit buggered I guess. I believe that they've been done as she was great to deal with and pretty genuine, but that doesn't really mean anything for a potential sale from me I guess.

Not my car im afraid-- as above--

I just PM'ed the owner to mention in their ad if the belts had been done as it would have been a good selling point- I do think of other owners on here!!

Sadly my own opinion now would be that the belts havent been done- either way you cant risk it now, get them done otherwise you risk the belt snapping, also residual value is effected-

first thing I check in the service book is pages 18/19 for the timing & accessories belts have been done, its annoying that renault dont even stamp them sometimes-

I agree with you Steve. I really need to make sure I do a check list of things to check when I buy car's, I always miss something stupid out haha.

It's pointless me risking it anyway. Is it approx £500 for the belts to be done? If I assumed they were done and then went to sell the car on in a year's time surely I'd lose out on that kinda £500 figure for not having evidence they've been done anyway.

So bit of a no brainer to get them done really.

Would probably give me a chance to get everything else looked over at the same time.

Yeah around 500 notes-

JMS is close to you, or possibly Mark fish- If you fancied a day out then Birchdown in Chester.....

I always hear great things about Fred so wouldn't hesitate to use him as long as he can give me a stamp or receipt lol.

Who's at Birchdown?

Isn't there a way of checking if the parts fitted look like they have been changed? Like tool marks on bolts, paint chipped off etc?

Ask the previous owner if they can provide receipts for the parts.

Well it was claimed to be April 2008 that it was done. I'd imagine it would be pretty hard to track back 2 years ago now. And it would still seem like a cheap make shift job. I'd rather just do it properly by somebody with experience and a good reputation. Sure it will cost me some notes, but it's better to say done by 'Company X a very well respected Renault Expert / Enthusiast' rather than done on the cheap by some mechanic I personally don't know. Lol.

thing is, if you dont get it done and you want to sell your car, you have no way of proving it was done.

get it done mate, piece of mind :)

  LY 182
Yeah I'll look to get it done soon. I will want to sell the car at some point so it has to be done. (Don't wanna rack up too many miles on this given the rare LY colour).

Also you can only 'see' the top of the auxillary belt-- not much help really-

Agreed. I got money knocked off when buying my car as it hadn't had the belts done and they were due. I drove home and straight to the garage where it was booked in to be done. I got it done for less than the money saved, but the seller agreed that it was harder to shift to entusiasts that are aware of the intervals.

Was good peice of mind to know it was actually done.

  LY 182
Yep. Gonna have to put this one down to me not being 100% thorough with my checks. I tend to assume everything is fine as stated when that's not always the case.

Ah well, I best get earning some more monies!

I'm in Bedford so probably closest to you if you want the belts doing. I'm mobile so can come to you, or you can bring it over to me whichever suits :)
