How do people afford their clios?

  Many Things
Ive had a gti and vts at the age of 18, the insurance was a 'bit' of an issue, but nowhere near as much of an issue than with the 172,

They cripple you on insurance, petrol and tax and when they need the cambelts doing they cripple you again.....all in all i would strongly advise not to get one until you're 20 and your insurance has came down a bit, or probably not get one at all unless you REALLY REALLY like them and your wage improves

i'm 19 with a 172. Insurance is "only" £1300.
It's true about going out every night and spending all your money on trainers ect, living cheaper means i drive the car i'd wanted since i was 17.

only just got my 172 for my 18th bday, 3k i saved up then a 1k loan of the rents :) 0% interest just 100 pound a month back to them...insurance wasnt much of a problem as i was paying 1,100 on a 1.2 im now only paying 1,500 for a 172.

Mate of mine though is paying 370 a month for a 2.0l 306 pug

Easy, setup standing order on pay day and budget in for £x amount into savings account, end up with nice amount of money and be patient! Just think, £200 a month and 18 months down the line £3600 which is in the territory of 172's.
And remember its not buying a cars that impacts monthly outgoings but if something goes wrong and you have to find £1000 straight away!

I think if it takes you 18 months to save £3600 then a relatively (for a hatch) expensive car is not for you.

Same as I pay at 19 after Flux's little mistake yesterday :D

£1300 isn't exactly a huge amount to pay for insurance imo. I've got a mate at my age who pay £2000 as a named driver on a W reg 1.4 206. Thats what I call expensive.

I genuinely can't understand people that pay so much money on car insurance. £1500 to insure a Clio... FLOL!!

May aswell flush your money down the bog.

I waited till 21 for cheaper insurance and then saved everything I got paid that summer temping between uni, sold my car and job done.

I paid silly money at 18 on a 1.4 Clio due to a claim and points, never wanted to do that again so I waited till I thought it was reasonable. I always make sure I have some money spare incase any problems occur too.

bought my 206 at 18 for 700 bangers saved up,
then got a bank loan for the clio at 3000
wrote that off sadly at christmas so got a megane with the payout
just got finance for my civic and traded in the meg.
and im only 20 so insurance is still shafting me at 1000

Borrowed just under 5k from my Dad, including the insurance amount to pay in one go, my little dynamique made up the rest for my 182. Bought it when i was 18.

Next month is my last payment to him, less than a year and a half to pay him back and I am so looking forward to having the extra few pennies a month to save for my OTT paint job quote!!

Work and a bit of student loan/grant.

Waiting till I'm 21 to go down the 172 route...insurance won't kill me by then hopefully.

Yeah, i was looking at 172 cups because they were cheaper but being a girl about things, i didn't like the idea of no air con and abs and i didn't like the 172s as much.
I got mine for 7k when they were all priced about 8250, so wasn't too bad - don't regret it at all but just hate having no money after paying for it and all. Very slow project!

Work all night and sleep all day! The good old fashion way..

24 and paying <£900 a year, not sure exactly on the actual total haha, but who cares, its a blinding motor!!

  Ph1 172.
My rents gave me £2000, then i borrowed 600 to pay for the rest of the car and then another £1000 for Insurance and to have a second key made. (£156 FTL)

I got £1600ish for my 02' Megane being written off, and had about whatever made the total £3000 in the bank..

I'm currently paying the other £3000 on finance over two years!
Last payment come January! :D

Cheap credit and slave tokens printed on worthless paper.

Party is over now.

In 5 years we'll look back on 20 year olds owning 15k cars and laugh.

i am ticked up to the eyeballs lol i had about £600 of outgoings every month a few months ago, got it down to less than half that now, all because i wanted fast cars and fancy parts, im now learning that if you want something you save up and buy it!!

Just earn loads TBH.
I just buy a car that I can easily afford to run and insure, as long as it's fun. The 172 falls into that category, so I have one.

Mum and Dad.

They pay for it. Live at home rent free.

CS wages pay for nights out etc etc.

Oh sorry, thought I was Waitey for a sec then ;)

Sorry?!, expensive?, thats whats known as foookin robbery lad...

Save your pennies mate, you want the car, then save for it. Nothing more rewarding knowing that the car sat on your drive is all paid for and is your own...

Being able to afford the car is one thing, but are you budgeting for insurance/tax/petrol/services?
Ive just hit 33 and pay a silly amount of insurance, lets just say its quite low. work for the government and im on a average wage, nothing to shout about, i also own a house and have had to run it alone for the past 12mths due to the better half leaving.. if i can still save for coilovers mate, you can save too.... ;) (christ i sound like my dad..)
