How do people afford their clios?

  Scirocco 2.0 tsi
Can you not scour your house for s**t to sell on ebay? seriously people will buy all sorts of stuff on ebay, you could make a bit towards it. I live a similar lifestyle to you except for the ridiculous amount on insurance each month and i earn 887 a month so we are comparable, i only pay 80/month on insurance and i can comfortably save 400-500 a month simply by not wasting it on loads of stuff i really don't need.

yer i think i am gonna have a look round the house. But i just buy crap ill use once and never again like or say on the weekend ill spend 50 and think where did that go?

I just got a 5k loan for my 182, paying back £180 a month for 2.5 years. Still living at home though so got plenty of spare money, it'll be a different story once I get my own place probably have to get a fiat panda;)

i dont fancy a loan specially being self employed i dont know if im working one day to the next. would love a 182 though

Work and lots of serious saving. When I was first saving for my 172, I can vividly remember setting out for a McDonalds treat at the weekend, then thinking that I wanted the car more and turning back home for a bowl of soup instead. *That's* dedication :p I also sold anything I could find on Ebay aswell, and got a smallish loan... (it was all worth it though!). Having said that I was well into my twenties - made do with lesser vehicles before that - getting one at 19 is ambitious. Sounds like you wanna start a budget book mate and scrutinise your money leakage - depends how much you want one tbh ;-)

There not expensive to run if you dont have a heavy foot but if your like me then you will find yourself in the petrol station quite often :rasp:

Insurance is also a b**ch at £240 a month and im 20 with 1year NCB. But i can afford that without any problems as i paid the same on my 1st car, just need to get some savings in order now!

I just put half my monthly salary into a savings account for 6 months and didnt take any out. I only spent what was in my current account. Still continue to do it now even after i have brought the car......

I saved up. I live at home .. don't earn serious cash .. but then I don't spunk away money on silly things. I also didn't own a grp.16 car when I was 19 either haha ;)

If you pay insurance monthly, sometimes that can add up to 20-30% increase. Thats a lot really, especially as you are probably talking in the thousands at your age...?
That extra grand you might be paying a year, could pay for a really nice holiday. Or just be a wedge to put towards something nice when older ?

I got the ph1 which is a tad faster, and (at the time) a lot cheaper than the ph2's. The interior is rubbish according to most people, but when I'm blasting along a B-road, the last thing I'm concerned with is the quality/colour/styling of the dashboard haha :D

Theres a lot of people on here who used to own silly cars when they were younger, and later regretted it as it's a bit of a waste of cash. If you earn 40k a year and live at home, then fine, do what you want ...

:boring:

Get an early ph2 172. Get some decent coilovers. End up with a better car than a 182, cheaper. Done.

Just save up for it, it'll put you in a better financial postion in the long run. Or you can buy this car on a loan, then the next on a loan and so on. Then one day when you're older, you'll work out how much interest you've paid to loan companies/insurers and realise how much better off you could have been.

If you can't afford it, you can't afford it at the end of the day.

Why save up for something you want when you can get it today and pay for it over time with a small interest rate loan?, saving up is hard but paying a loan back is much easier as you don't have the option not to pay it back each month!
comparison sites for a cheap loan......always go with a company you have heard of though :)
My 182 wasn't a big difference in price to run from last car as that was a 2.5L discovery. it can be hard though, my brother wants a 350z but the insurance is £2500 as he is 28 but only had a license for one year.

If you can't afford it, don't buy it. No point in living out with your means. A Clio 182 is not the sort of car I would have bought at 19 on a relatively low wage. There is more to life than running around in a nice car...pensions, savings and getting on the property ladder are far more important than the size of engine in the front of your car.

Getting in debt to buy a car is stupid. You end paying more for something that is depreciating. Easy term credit is the reason so many people are in a financial mess.

When I was earning £800 a month (full time in retail in a nice warm shop that def. pays at the lower scale) I had a £800 Polo GT. Cheap to tax, insure and run. It was fun and was well within my means. Sometimes I struggle to run the Clio as I've just graduated and don't start full time until October. Things crop up (hit a deer) and you find yourself with unexpected bills (£400) that is then followed by expected bills...£400 tyres...service...new engine mounts...tax...insurance...once it all piles on you can be looking at some big ol' number that are way above your monthly income.

It sounds like you need to go back to owning something like a VTR/cheaper.

By the time your 20 you should really be looking to have an ISA or two, have started a pension and have some sort of savings account that's seeing a monthly income. It might sound boring but it's nice knowing that you are on your way to having some decent cash behind you. Also makes owning a car a lot easier.

Stop going out on the town every week is what I do if I need/want something, and I'm
a whizz at roulette but wouldn't advise that. Lol as said get a normal 172 and a few mods, don't over stretch yaself and get into a rut.

I'll send you my pay pal address if you want :rasp: hehe

Honestly cheap run about FTW. I've thought about chopping the Clio in for a little 1.4 TDi Lupo or the likes, just for a while so I can save for something better.

I worked many 7 day weeks over the summer whilst at uni, then got finance on what I didn't pay in cash.

I'm 19 I traded in my last car (which I bought with a loan) and borrowed a grand off my dad & saved a grand.. I've had the 182 for about 3 -4 months now after a year I will have paid off my loan and then I just owe my dad a grand :rasp: sorted.

My insurance is £160 a month. That's how I did it anyway, however your VTS isn't worth as much as my old clio was (55 plate lowish miles) so doesn't really help you.

Save up. They're not realy expensive, I saved up for about a year to change my car. I still went out, went on holiday etc. Just didn't waste money on stupid things.

Don't get one if your only 19, you wouldn't be asking the question if you could afford it. Wait 3 or 4 years and get one when you won't be raped by insurance.

I don't understand why people would stop going out and enjoying life etc. just to get the car they want. Sure save, but don't live like a pikey and stay in 24/7.

Ok a question i got whilst were on the subject :rasp: im 17 and im looking for some sort of apprentaship, most are between £100-£140 a week, which would come to around £400 a month, will i get taxed on that? would leave me with like £200 a month which equals feck all.

Everyone gets a tax free allowance - so the first £6.5k per year is tax free.

Hard work and making my hard earned money work harder for me. Look into sensible banking, you can get 6% interest on a current account from certain banks and building societies, but look at the catches, you normally have to pay in between £500 and £1800 a month to actually earn the interest and it's capped at balances of around the £2500 to £3000 mark.

Saving are pretty rubbish at the moment but everyone should have an ISA as the interest is earned gross, meaning no tax deducted. You can save £3600 a year in a cash one or twice as much if you want to invest in shares to.

In reply to Pearcy if you earn more than £110.01 a week you'll have to pay National Insurance at 11% on difference of what you earn and the £110.01.
With tax you only pay it when you earn over £6,475 in a year (2009/2010 tax year) and it's calculated cumulatively so if your wages vary from week to week you could end up paying tax one month and getting some or all of it back the next month.
