How little oil??

I did a service on my sisters 1.2 16v Clio at the weekend, and was pretty shocked!

Dropped the oil, and there was slightly over 2 litres in it!
No oil light on or anything.

Obviously goes without saying she should have dipped it etc, but I thought this was horrendously low!
How little could a car run on before going pop?

Tbh, my car seems to go through a lot of oil. Have to top it up every month
