How many BHP does air conditioning effectively use up?

  GW RS200
Read tonight in EVO that in a Ferrari they reckoned on a rolling road, having air conditioning on used up about 3bhp. When I have mine on in my Clio 172, it feels like a damn sight more, after a while of driving with it on, turning it of the car feels mental - hugely more spritely! If thats the difference 3bhp makes, someone get me a modchip, quick :) Anyone actually been on a RR with a/c on and off to test?

well i think some are driven off the engine and some have seperate compressors? if off the engine it'll use more, maybe im talking shight

Like I said, If you need power, turn it off. Not that I claim to know how much BHP is used by the Aircon.
However, I cant imagine anyone saying/thinking whilst on the rolling road, "Lets try one with and one without the Aircon"
I may stand corrected and I have had a few beers

On the old V12 Jags, it used to take 14bhp off the engines! lol.

0.? on a clio if that. makes a diff to fuel consumption tho.

Lol.. I see it as a boost button. When theres a potential type r, LCR, MCS etc next to you... off it goes. lol

I do know that it can take upto 10mpg off your average consumption if left on. Round towns and cities mind, not as bad on the motorway.
I only use it to de-mist the windscreen and other windows. ;)

OT - Retards in the states claim that it's more fuel economic to have AC on. Saw them do the test on mythbusters lol surely it's obvious it's not economic due to the power they use

Now we all know why they go through so much petrol over there Nightfire :D

Its that or the fact non of them can drive a stick most of them are too sodding lazy to learn how to use a clutch and an actual gearstick. A mate of mine who lives in the states thought it was funny we mainly use manuals until i poited out our cars are normally quicker and get better MPG because of it.

Guess what he has learnt how to drive since? lol.

Does using the climate control function use more power too even if it's warming up the car instead of cooling it down with air con?

I don't think it does the other way round (warming the car up)....the AC light never comes on in my car when using the CC.

The 172 with climate control that I have been in had a noticeable lack of power when turned on. Switch off and the car came alive again.

Try it Fletcher- you'll see what I mean.

No idea but probably 5hp or so don't forget though you've only 166hp as standard so if your using mayabe 50hp manataining your speed then put your foot down you're only getting 110hp so a 5hp drop is a fair bit plus that assums your at max power more likly you'll need 40hp to move and full throttle gives you 30hp more so a 5hp deficit is a fair bit.

Very true, people always forget you don't get 166bhp all the time! lol
