Off topic but I was looking on Autotrader today at Mk2 golfs, some for sell with over 200K on the clock. Could you see a Renault doing that?

I could see the engine doing that if properly serviced yeah.....just expect to find a completely different car surrounding it after everything else has failed and been replaced...;)

Maybe these Mk2 golfs had clio engines in them;)

Personally i would'nt buy a car with over 50k on it.People have said that 100k on a car, if maintained well, isnt a problem, but tbh i wouldnt risk it.

Depends on the car tbh, I wouldn't have a Clio on 100k but then again I would have no problem with a BMW/Audi/ Merc on this mileage.
Its also worth considering that if you buy the car on 100k and you do say 20k per year, how many years service are you going to get out of it before big bills?

Is it not true hat some Volvos have clocked close to 1 million? I do think over 100K your asking for trouble unless you they have a FSH but then again you have to pay a premium for them and can probably get a car on 70K for the same price.

Yes but i'd much rather have a 100k car with FSH than a car on 70k with partial/no service history.

  53 Clio's & counting
mines on 113k with full history and runs really well, still has the same compression when it was new, doesnt smoke or burn any oil or water

i think its fine if there looked after properly

How longs a piece of string.. depends on servicing, how its been driven, you might be unlucky and get an internal failure that you cant do anything about..

Nothing wrong with modern engines, my daily hack 16v laguna is on 105k now, 15k in the last year with no bills at all.. a mate here has an R reg laguna 2.0 8v and that is on 178k last time i saw, engine and car both still fine.

Yet i've seen 172/182 etc that say new engine just fitted and claim low mileage, seen one 182 that had about 20k and a new engine. Probably down to abuse due to the nature of the owners and lack of servicing.

Agreed, wtf ??

If the negine was a small cc (say a 1.2) I could probably understand, but a 2.0 will see 100k no probs if looked after.
i have to agree that i wouldnt want to buy a high mileage car - my 182 has only 40k, yet i am looking at new 197s this weekend. I like to ideally keep a car thats in the 3 yr warranty.
The reason is that i personally imagine a rensport with over 100k is going to be a nightmare to sell (when there are plenty of low mileage models about), and anyone who could only afford a very high milage 172 probably cant afford the insurance, so avery limited market. Maybe i'm wrong, but i wouldnt have the bottle to take the gamble.
