How much/How easy to get 20bhp gains frm a valver?

IM seriously considering getting a valver but i would like 2 pack a bit more of a punch! if i went down the road of cams and pulleys etc, would 20 bhp gains be realistic? i dnt have a clue! lol also what would i be looking at in costs of parts and are the fairly straight forward 2 fit 4 some1 who has half a brain wen it comes 2 mechanics?

Best mod would be to put a 2.0 bottom end on there. Only a difference of 13bhp, but 2.0 bottom end gives much more torque low down and there is a huge difference (apparently, never driven a 2.0 myself). Then you could take any further mods from there, but not really any point in tuning a valver imo when you could just 2.0 it and tune that.

Benefit is that both engines look pretty much identical so mr insurance needn't know ;)

basically engine out, remove cylinder head from old engine and put it on the new bottom end then back in. There are a few other things that need changed such as the starter motor, and iirc the flywheel if it's a megane bottom end you use. Try doing a search here and on WC and there should be quite a bit of info floating about.

You could always put cams in your valver and then put a 2.0 bottom end on later, but imo the 2.0 bottom end is the best place to start as it will also respond better to any mods than the 1.8.
 
Get a 2.0 bottom end its the best mod ou'll do plus cams etc are much more benefitial.

On a good 1.8 engine say 150hp from cams ITG exhaust remap etc.

Williams engine is best as it has the better cams and head than the 1.8 that stock is 150hp.

2.0 bottom end with 1.8 head is a few hp down but with cams filter exhast etc and a remap and ~180hp.
