How much would I save 2.0-1.2

  Mountune Tractor
Hi Guys,
What would you think the monthly saving would be if I downgraded from a 172 to a 1.2 dynamique for example? Bear in mind I am 26 with 8 years NCB and I drive about 16 miles to and from work each day.
I'm thinking:
£50 fuel
£30 Insurance
£10 tax
What else???

Not enough to justify it IMO.

If you have driven a 172 for a while, you will be used to the speed. I know that if I downgraded, I would spend my entire life ragging the arse out of it as the lack of speed would frustrate me.

There will be a nice drop in insurance and to a lesser extent, tax but fuel will be the biggest cost and I don't think yuo will save that much over 16 miles a day.

All my 2p of course.

Good point len but I'm struggling to find beer tokens at the moment. Living on your own and owning a 172 is hard work :dapprove: .

This might sound daft but, i'm sure you have a mate you trust with a lower powered car.

Why not swap cars for a couple of weeks, insured obviously and see just how much difference it makes. I know I wouldn't want to sell the bullett and then only save £30 a month.

Alternatively, do what a couple I know have done. The boyfriend had a ST3 and the girlfriend a MK5, 1.4 Golf, just so she could tell people she had a Golf. They have recently bought their first house but a terraced wouldn't do so they have bought a 3 bedroomed semi' with an interest only mortgage, just so they had the biggest house. Now to save money, the bf has swapped the ST3 for an R32 and the gf is swapping the Golf for a 172. It makes perfect sense, really, it does.

Try supporting a missus, 2 kids, my own ass and owning a 172 :p
Dont know about you but I would save about a million quid in insurance and a bit of fuel.

But back to downgrading.... Ive been driving my girlfriends mk4 1.2 fiesta with no power steering while my cars having work done... and its horrid! I want to cry... see all the big cars fly past you...
Im off to cry like a little girl until I get my 172 back.... waaaaaaaaahhhh!

Fuel: I fill up 1 times a week. Costs me £35 for a full tank, about 40L.
Insurance: Im 18 and pay £490 on my dad's. Go get some quotes.
Tax: More than a tenner mate, right now 172's cost what ? £200-210 ish ? I paid £100 this year, which was about 2 months ago.

Tyres. I think 2 front tyres were ment to be about £80 but im not sure. I didnt pay full price.

I spend between £35 and £40 a week dependent on price at the time and I get around 275-300 miles per tank.

I spend £20 a week on petrol in my 1.2 16v and that gets me between 170-200 miles depending how I use my right foot.

  audi a6 3.0tdi
i get same miles out of my 172 as that 1.2 above i can get 270 mile to £35 and mine is deffinately not driven like a girl

Tbh it depends on how you drive.

I give mine death most days and rag it from cold. I get around 27mpg.

They are really fun IMO and if you put some coilovers on it would handle as well as a standard 172. Obviously the straight line power isn't there though.

How about looking at DCi 80s? Then you can consistently get 50mpg and performance won't be far behind your 172 when driving sensibly...

If you seriously want to downgrade, downgrade to a DCi80 and get a remap on it.

i used the same amount in my 1.2 as my 172 due to having to rev the tits of the 1.2 to move.

  106 GTi
I run a 1.4 Pug 306 day to day and get a shed load of miles out of a tank 400+ on 40 quid of unleaded.

That's my point, my 172 gets a good shoeing on a daily basis, constant 100mph cruising on the autobahn ;) and I still get 30-32mpg.

I've just been from Leeds to Manchester for a meeting for which, work will pay 45p per mile so I took it steady. I set off yesterday morning at 8am and arrived in Manchester at 10am due to the crap traffic even though it was only 65 miles away and I still returned 36mpg. On the return journey today, I got that figure up to 40mpg @ a constant 80. I can't see an issue.

Middo or Taylor would be good to ask as they have both recently gone from 1.2 to 2.0.

the only play you really save money is tax, insurance and car cost.

i get more mpg in mine then when i had the 1.2 in i only put a tenner a week in, tax thats about £100 saving then the car cost at the age of 28 i dont think swapping is gonna fund your beer tokens try other things like phones, sky, magazing subscriptions, i saved myself about £30 a month last year by ending stupid purchases i only have car and insurance outgoing once a month now the rest my friend is cider visor tokens

IMO the older you get, the less point there is driving a smaller engined car. The difference in cost isn't going to be massive and when you compare it to how frustrated you'll end up getting by driving a 1.2 all the time, it's not worth it.

If you HAVE to go smaller, at least get a 1.4. I imagine there is literally no difference in costs but you will be just that little bit less likely to kill your missus when you finish the drive home from work.

I see your point but when you own your own place, insurance and car finance are the least of your worries.lol.
It's not worth getting rid of the 172 unless I can save myself about 100-150 a month anyway. May as well keep it and continue roasting most other cars on the road.

I don't think I could do it, I sometimes drive my boyfriends 1.2 clio to work, and the lack of power is quite frustrating. I used to drive it everyday to try and save my miles, but I gave up as I would rather be driving mine! I don't think mine is that much more to run, not enough to justify downgrading.

My car is soooooooooo cheap to run i don't see what all the fuss is about???

Whatever car you buy you have to; service, tax, insure, put petrol in etc etc.

Try running a evo then tell me about it.

Tax for the 182 is £215? Just keeps going up. I paid £180 for my tax yesterday.

At your age, the insurance difference between a 2.0 and a 1.2 can't be that much?

You'll be saving yourself about £10-£15 a week in total I reckon.

Sell your 172 and buy a citroen C1. Cheap as chips, you can pick 'em up for 5500 new. Forty quid a year to tax, group 1 insurance, 50MPG, great laugh to drive, engine sounds nice - 3 cylinder chirp, but it and a big but it ain't a 172, it's an a - b car.

172's are very cheap to run cars indeed, but of course there are cheaper.

What people are forgetting, is that by downgrading in the first place will free up over £2000 for a similar age/milage swap. Running costs on a 1.2 are obviously going to be less than a 2.0, don't kid yourself.

DCI's are the real money savers though, £50 tax and 50mpg is a receipe for ka-ching;)

well obviously insurance was the main killer for me, however being a good boy and insuring all my mods on the 1.2 was only about 400 quid different (21 0NCB). Petrol isnt THAT much different to be honest, prob about 7mpg difference with normal driving, however that is using v power which is more expensive to begin with.
