how often do you thrash your 172/182’s

  An orange one

by thrash i mean...up to gear light in most gears, on limit through corners etc, just wondering cause i am becoming increasing addicted to the vvt and the way the damn thing handles so good every time i drive it.

but ive always felt afterwards as if ive been hard on the car?! is this normal or do they stand up to a fair bit of abuse?!

Think I still saw new ones knocking about during the 2004 summer. May have been pre reg though.

I love giving it some stick from time to time never really 1st gear though i always feel like im hurting it then................

Rob.

all the bloody time. these cars have the problem of makeing you feel good when in them and driving hard. they can take it dont worry about that.

i spank its monkey every time - deep down i think im hurting it, especially when its not fully warmed.

The problem is this; ill start it in a morning and have a fag while its warming up then nurse it till the thermo is at half way before ripping it. BUT the engine isnt thoroughly warm and it sets its rev limit a little lower which always catches me out.

Blatting through an overtake and the limiter cuts in does surprise me unless im really prepared for it.

im waffling cos im bored.

ill stop now

only in the dry and when car warmed up, certainly never from cold, hit rev limiter sometimes, wish I could make a point of changing at say 6700-6800 instead of over 7k but what the hell, its only a car LOL
im trying to cut down on standing starts though to help prolong the life of clutch

I rev mine to 7 most times im in it...... wait untill its warm of corse tho... did it to my 106 for 2 years and not one single problem and the 182 engine is designed for it so dont worry :)

i wouldnt revvvv it up and dump the clutch tho.... i no sum1 that bust his drive shafts doin it!! y only in the dry?? wets not a problem unless ur on a corner

I rarely get the chance to open it up on the daily commute. Sometimes Ill take the back roads home to stretch the legs a little but the roads are generally too busy for any decent fun.

I make a point of taking it out at the weekend tho to get my moneys worth. Dont mind thrashing it at all. I just make sure all the fluids and oil are ok first (even tho it hasnt used a drop of oil since I got it!) and get everything warmed up first.

And I thought IT was just me:D

While its legal and safe, ill nail it most of the time upto the limiter.

Just as long as its warm, who cares its got a warranty and still returns over 31mpg

Had mine 5 days now and havent hit the shift light yet...cant be driving it hard enough! Went out for a quick drive yesterday and it turned into an hour around south Hampshire...still getting used to the power of these things. Loving the induction roar tho!

  BMW 120i Sport

Once its warmed up, drive it like i stole it and use all available power, unless im driving in residential or 30/40 mphs.

Even then, ill rag it to 7000 rpm in first gear, then block change into fourth.

172/182 was never made for easy driving, if thats your thing, sell it and get a Ford Fiesta LX 1.1

  GDI ???BHP Cliosport172

Every single time i get in my car! Currently running 24.9mpg. I rag the sh*t out of it all the time (accept when my parents are in the car, then im like Driving Miss Daisy!)

  172 ph1 ASBO SLAYER

i nail mine to the limiter in every gear most days, the only time it gets a break is when eka drives it;)

wot the hell theres no point avin it unless you abuse it. some things were built to be broken

by the way 25k miles two sets of boots, 3 engine mounts, and a cluch!

  EVO VII

yer i open mine up at least once a day.

sometimes 3 4 5 6 7 8 times a day ;)

78k on the clock still goes well.

Every morning and evening when I join the motorway and plant it straight in the outside lane and start hunting down those fat BMW 3/5/7 Seriess :D

drove mine on the motorway last monday in the space of 10 mins mpg dropped from 35 to 24 kinda worried me that i was burning that much petrol did no more than 80 mph rest of trip. but i usually dont redline it change bout 6k rpm (at most) dont like to really rag it day in day out but if a twocer is being stupid il give it a run. no ragging in wet as my car cant get any really grip if i drop the clutch in first hmmm. the engine note is f*cking awesome though!!!!!!!

  172 cup TT

Great thread for potential buyers to check the users past posts to see how car was treated :)

Mine on the other hand never goes over 2.5k revs.. from 1st straight into 5th gear and oil changed EVERY 4 weeks.. i like my comfort you see - thats why i bought a 172 cup ;)

I normally work in London and dont really get to drive my car in any meaningful fashion, however Ive been in Milton Keynes for the last 3 weeks and have the pleasure of driving everyday!

Milton Keynes if you havent been consists of horizontal and vertical roads(mainly DC) with roundabouts at every cross section, its great for ragging your car around, 2nd/3rd gear off the roundabout and up past 4/5K before slowing ofr the next round about, great stuff, very addictive! Plus the road home isnt too bad, nice flowing A road with a couple of good overtaking stretches!

loving it!

good point re. potential buyers but the biggest problem will be buying a car thats standard but was modded for the past 3 years and put back to standard when being sold, but the owner doesnt tell you

  406 passion wagon..

I find it very difficult not too! I have days of nanny driving and days where I rag the nuts off of it! The K&N roar is just so adictive! Various BMW/Jag/Chavs have been blown away looking gob-smacked!

It is a car to be driven hard! You just have to!
