How to activate Office on new laptop

Just got my first ever (at the age of 33) brand new laptop!

The hand me down that I've been using for 6 years or so has Office 2010 on it, the new one doesn't and won't open any of my office documents. I have absolutely no documentation for the old one as my brother just gave me it when he bought a new one. Being honest I don't have a clue if its even legit or not, I'm not all that clued up.

How do I go about making it work?

I'd download this:

http://www.libreoffice.org/

Completely free, open source, just as good as MS Office for most things.

If you really want to keep Office 2010 then you can run this on your old laptop:

It will pull out the Office activation key, then you'll need to get an Office 2010 install disk from somewhere.

Yep, LibreOffice can open MS Office documents and save in MS Office file formats too.

No problem, hope it turns out to be useful.

Open office is another good free one.

I used to use Open Office myself, but Libre Office is getting all the development these days. Open Office is sadly on the verge of being mothballed, there aren't enough developers left working on it now to keep up with security updates etc. Libre is a fork of Open Office.

The other option is to check if your workplace has signed up to the Microsoft Home Use Program (HUP).

If they do, you can buy the fully legit version of Office 2016 Professional Plus for £9.95. A fraction of the cost that it appears in the stores at.

Its pretty popular here - especially when you can get the latest Visio and Project versions at £9.95 each as well. Mainly older staff that buy it when their kids are at college or uni.

Not actually looked at Libre myself. Might have a dabble - more so with OpenOffice falling by the way side.
