How to paint calipers

  BMW 323i Coupe
After seeing photos and threads on how people have done theirs, I think I'm going to give mine a shot.

I'll buy some Hammerite Smooth, but is there anything I need to know before I start?

For example, how long do I need to leave them to dry before I can drive the car?

What colour you painting them as if you use hammerite you be touching them up all the time to keep them looking fresh unless you're using black. Get some proper caliper paint as it is heat resistant enough for the job unlike hammerite which should only be used upto 80 degrees (on the tin) and you will have more choices of colour rather than being restricted to hammerites limited choice.

Try www.larkspeed.com or even ebay if you're gonna do the job well then use the right stuff. Make yourself familiar with taking your calipers off so they will be painted properly rather than trying to do a botch job with them still on the car. The advantage of the proper stuff is that they usually come with a brake cleaner spray as well which if you don't use can come in handy later if you get squeaky brakes.

How do you take them off?

I only want to do it as a little job for me to do as I've not got many shifts in work so I have free time. Moneys quite tight at the moment so I thought Hammerite would be ok for now as it's cheap, and I can get it tomorrow.

Its very easy to take them off go to Halfords and read the section in the Haynes manual, after reading it everything should become clear. Calliper paint is about £25ish but its worth doing properly.

dont bother with caliper paint. hammerite does the job. but you MUST clean the calipers properly. wire brush.

As SC03OTT said hammerite is fine, i used hammerite smooth for mine.

Just remove carriers and calipers and use a wire brush to remove any rust, apply a layer, leave for a few hours and apply another layer, dries nice and smooth :)

Well mine did anywho :)

Eash job to do. Whip the wheels off, brush the crap off the caliper, paint with hammerite and leave to set for hour or 2. jobs a goodun!

Do you have to take the calipers off to paint them? cant u just paint staight onto them with a brush and some paint? or is this risky?

(im only asking because ive only ever sprayed them before and masked off everything else... didnt remove them.)

Leave them on. Just use a 1/2" brush and you will be fine.

Here's mine whilst i was doing them:

Just did mine the same colour ^^

Going to take mine off and properly make it smooth and then add the hammerite again. Might go for white too lol

To get the best results, make sure you let them dry before adding more layers

I did, you don't have to take them off, it just makes it easier and gives you a better finish as it can be done in more detail. You can also use hammerite as everyone seems to have no issues from doing so but I used high temp calliper paint. No one will inspect your brakes so it will only be you who knows, its completely up to u.
