Embarrassed to say
All of us with the rsport need to know how to swap our ecus around in the event of our cars needing engine warranty work. SOmeone from the group sent me the instructions below to do it.
"Its a bit of a fiddler to take out "on the road" as it were. Youll need some sort of socket set and i think screw driver (its been a while since we changed it over). One main tip for working in that area is to move the battery forwards (to front of car) so youve got some room to get the sockets in there. You need to also remove the airbox/induction pipe which joins to throttle body (basically to make the area easy to get your tools into).
Once removed - take off the cover/protector from top of ECU, it should just pull up - takes a bit of a yank, but as its been changed might be easier than it was at first. Unplug the ECU by sliding the plastic plug thing in the direction of the wire (towards passengers wing mirror) and it detaches the wire/plug from the ECU. Now basically just look for bolts which join the ECU housing to the engine bay and undo these, theres a nut-and-washer which is one of the first that you can see near the top - probably best to start with that one - the unit should become manouverable once this is off. Once youve got the ECU housing (containing ECU) out of the engine, start taking that apart (try and remember exactly where the bolts and screws etc go, its quite obvious when you see it and are doing it, but be particular or youl end up getting paranoid and forget how to put it back together! Screw the old ECU into the casing once youve removed Rsport, both are identical bar a letter at the end of the code, so make sure you dont mix them up and end up putting the Rsport back in again after all that!!!!
Assemble all items back as you removed (youl understand when youve doing it - im not mechanically minded at all and managed it with a socket set and a screw driver (in fact you might not even need a screw driver....?- i cant really remember!). Plug the ECU wire into the old ECU and close the slider whilst gently pushing down on the plug. The hard part is putting that metal case on the top of the ECU housing at the end!"
