How to tell if my Clio 172 is mapped or chipped

Trying to find out if my Clio is mapped it's surprising quick for what it is I've raced both my friends 182 s and it pulled lengths on them the car my friends 182 rolled 189 bhp and it pulls a good few car lengths

How are we supposed to know? What has your mates had done to it to make it 189?

It's mapped and got a full janspeed exhaust system and carbon induction kit. I was just wonder if I can open the brain see if it's been chipped or is it just one of those fast ones that are about

For a start your mates wont have 189bhp

Chipping is an old skill thing. Newer cars like the 182 arent chipped. They are remapped using the OBD2 port. I believe most maps raise the rev limiter so that's probably a good way to tell.

Borrow/buy an RS tuner, plug in and it'll show the software version and date.

Depends on the RR. If the CS RR was anything to go by mine made 190BHP. If however I assume the RR was optimistic (although some doubt it was :/) and that a stock 172 with a rattling dephaser made 172 then mine was probably around 180BHP.

As for telling it is remapped? It's tricky. An RR can show this against others on the day but IME a stock 172 will have a strong kick of power @5k and feel a little flat below then. Personally I like that sensation of delivery. A remapped one like mine tends to feels torquey far lower down. A friend of mine reckon the power kicks on at 3.5kRPM on mine and he has a stock 172.

OTOH, mine is very easy to drive around town, and in a relaxed manner.

A 172 or 182 with an exhaust and carbon (?) induction kit will not make 189 in the real world, i dont care what the rr tells you.

I agree, but I was merely making a point . As said, a stock 172 that day did 180BHP on the dyno. I doubt that figure as well!

Yup. Even a cammed clio wont pull 'lenghts' in a straight line.

Have you tried swapping cars to see if it's not just the difference in your driving style? If your 172 is still quicker with your mate at the wheel than you driving the 182 then you can at least rule it out...
