HPI check has bought back some info!

  Trophy #473
Im looking at buying a car but the HPI has come back with:

VRM currently recorded by an insurance company as theft 26/10/06.

Ive asked the owner and he said the keys were stolen from the previous owners house and the car was then found 4 miles down the road. It has had new keys and locks.

Help/Opinions?

Walk - if he knew it was recorded for something minor like that he should have said in the first place imo

haggling tool tbh.

It wouldnt bother me driving a previously stolen car, but I would want a few quid off.

Its stolen recovered then and that will effect resale value down the line imo, i'd walk unless it was cheap enough to warrent the hassle which i'm guessing its not.

Nothing wrong with the car. But if he's lied about that (or not disclosed, same difference imo) what other hidden delights could you find?

Well I can have it for 7k, that seems fairly reasonable for the mileage and year... and condition.
yeah I know what you mean about not disclosing that info but on the other hand I didnt ask at the off.

does the hpi check say stolen/recovered?

if so it could mean that it was picked up and taken back home and not necesarily stolen, i had this argument as my car was towed home from an accident but the hpi group state that my car was stolen and recovered when it was only recovered, and now it affects me selling up and insuring

No it only says: VRM currently recorded by an insurance company as theft 26/10/06
it has not been recoreded with the police as being stolen, just the insurance company.

Doesnt matter. If he was asked and denied it, thats against the law.
If he isnt asked and doesnt say, tough luck tbh!!

Spot on. It is a listed. Also could have been damaged as well. The insurance have paid out the full value of the car if it appears on the HPI report.

It is no different to sell that an other listed car, so not worth the market price. It wont be recorded with police anymore as the car was recovered.

Ive got an full HPI report for it, and all it bascily says is; VRM currently recorded by an insurance company as theft 26/10/06... So what! The car looks mint and I cant see any repaires other than a 'smart repair' on the corner of the front bumper, Its not category listed either. All VIN codes match up etc.
I will be the 3rd owner.
Insurance is sorted £777 with Direct line, 350 excess, 5 yrs NCB and 6 points, im 23. :)

can you get history removed?

Have you followed the advice on the HPI report to wait a few days while they find out if an Insurance company owns this car?, the previous owner did not keep it long after the theft, just over 2 months, however the current owner has owned the car since Jan 2007 which is usually a good sign.

Yeah ive spoke to the police and they have run it through the PNC and its fine, may just be a f**k up on the insurance side and the 'case' hasnt been closed.

TBH mate I wouldn't post those details up on a forum where every tom dick and harry can see them as your address, vehicle details and everying are on there. If someone wanted a Trophy and lives near you then they know in a few days where to get one:eek:

Yeah I realise that but the building where I live is like fort knox! cctv, electric gates and under ground parking etc! I'll remove it once a few more people have cast there opinions.
