Hsustyle's Flamer 172

  Megane R26
I'm back ?

Some of you might remember my ph1 I sold a few months back. Loved it but fancied a change.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="" title="Cars"><img src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/805/39981590305_9c6f7d7014_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="Cars"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Then came a lovely 306 Gti-6.
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="" title="Gti6"><img src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/801/40187585174_914e0f0e76_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="Gti6"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Not as quick or capable as I remember so I flipped it and bought a Corolla T Sport. ? Fun engine but wow, terrible chassis, terrible Gearing.
It had to go, will make a lovely car for someone who hasn't driven a nice chassis!
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="" title="Tsport"><img src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/858/26686704467_cafc526821_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="Tsport"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

nice colour. what do think you think compared to the ph1? I found the ph2 a bit cheaper build wise and less clunky/ more plasticky gearchange

Would take a flamer though. What didn't you like about the Corolla?

I bet it’s good to get another 172! I have considered Corolla T Sports in the past before but the gearing and woolly chassis has put me off too. Interesting you got rid of the 306 GTI-6 though as they are great fun to drive and similar in performance to a 172.

The 6 had a lovely engine and the gearbox was a joy but it needed a new rear beam so handling was far from good!

Lol, oh I see. Yeah a friend had one of these and it did feel very rapid. The gearbox really helped. I don’t think the handling was as good as the 172 mind, and there wasn’t any issues with his. Still great fun though, and his 200,000 mile example upset a lot of quick cars at track days

Ph1 definitely felt better put together. But it's not had at all, nice surprise to find nearly all the suspension is new.
The corolla had a spongey chassis, not much steering feel and the gears were designed so bad. There was no way to stay in 'lift' between 1st and second gear and would drop out between the rest of the gears unless bounced off the limiter and shifted fast. The power just wasn't accessible, so frustrating!

Started every time, ran like a dream and not a single rattle, definitely one of the more comfy cars I owned. Oh and the Facebook owners club.. Wow, total bunch of idiots, I thought Cliosport Facebook page was bad ?

  Megane R26
Yep pics now work.

So when you selling/breaking this one? And of the month? ?
? I need to stick to one car. Gutted I sold the ph1 to be honest. It was running like a dream and I had done everything I wanted to it.. Silly me.

I got this lull of nostalgia with the 306,it just handled so bad due to warn rear beam that I quickly lost interest. Anyway, I'm back, the new 172 is lovely and I'll try to stick it out a bit longer. Lots planned!

  Megane R26
Haha, only joking ?

Good to hear mate. What's the deal with the brass bushes in the BMS?
Yanoo on here sells them for the 1*2 /scenic /bms set up. €8 for a pair of brass bushes that replace the plastic bushes at the bottom of tbe gearstick where it connects to the long gear selector rod underneath the car. Makes a nice difference sharpening the gear feel up! Definitely worth the money

Looks a decent flamer you've found there. What's the ride like on the grams springs? I'm fancying a change but can't decide on different springs or go balls deep and get coilovers.

Im really impressed. I was looking at going with Cooksports again but the ride and drop on these is on par.

  Megane R26
Are they as stiff as cooksports? I read they are a bit more progressive, I'm finding the cooksports a bit hard as the roads get worse and bumpier.
Hmm I really don't know. I had a whiteline arb on my others and other mods so this does feel a bit softer over bumps. I think.. I'm impressed thou.

  Megane R26
And the problem begin.

I had a slight coolant drip. Looked like it was the big coolant pipe. I replaced this and turns out it's the bottom of the actual Rad. We poured some Kseal in the Rad till My Nissens replaced comes in.

Sat Nav

It speaks to me but the display is blank. Tried everything but still no joy so I'll try to find a new screen.

Horrible clicking /bang noise
I get a massive clonk /knock when going into reverse. Then I got into first and it fine, back into reverse and clonk again.
It does it when coming on and off throttle too. All engine mounts are pretty much brand new and torqued up right.

So I think it's inside the box or the OS driveshaft splines worn on the driveshaft where it slots on the gearbox. I belive it might be skipping a bit? Hard to explain but I saw a similar post on here with that being the culprit.

I fitted Fabia splitter and my black pov spec dial surround.

Does that shaft fit? As I can see it is not the Renault one and I think you will got some issues with the inner boot. I replace my shaft about 4 time and the only way to proper install a shaft on the driver side was to use genuine one.

Fits good but inner boot will run on a small tab on the engine black and spill all the grease. I used a cabletie around the boot and it tightened it enough to clear the block by a few mm. 200 miles in and it's still perfect with a good enough gap.

I chopped that small tab off the block on my last ph1, will do the same on this soon.

My sat nav decided to work for a few mins!

I was driving the car gently when the car totally died halfway around a corner. At the same time the sat nav screen flashed up!

The car then wouldn't start at first, cranking over but not firing up. I waited a couple of mins and it started?

Anyway, I have no idea what happened but tbe car dying seemed to fire up the sat nav display!

I input my address, moved off and the display went blank again! I can't seem to get it back.

Also, I had the engine oil topped up by my local mechanic last week and after 400 miles the dipstick indicted no oil and I got a service warning on the dash. 1l at least in just over a tank. At a very gentle 39mpg... Not good.

I then washed the car to cheer me up, cleans up well.

That gap remains the same, if one time it is good it will always be. There were some guys that says engine mount could be the problem, lol.
Good you sort it out with this one.

Mine has 120k miles and uses only 600ml at 5k change interval. I think the stem seals are dead?
What oil are you using?

  Megane R26
First break down!

Bogged down and won't start. Just cranks over, car is warm, have been diving for 20mins.

Will start after leaving it for 15mins but bogs down again when setting off.

Crank sensor? Throttle pedal?

The white wire from the engine starter could have a bad contact. The crank position sensor cause some missfires not just no start.

  Megane R26
I left it for 30 mins and it fired up again. Got it home and haven't driven it since.

I've ordered a new Crank sensor and coolant temp sensor and go from there.

  Megane R26
Still wondering what it's worth? ? I'm sure you'll get to the bottom of these issues soon and be able to enjoy it.

Ha. Its all running spot on now after I fitted a few new bits-
New Radiator
New expansion bottle
New coolant temp sensor
New map sensor
New Crank sensor

Fitting a Whiteline rear arb tomorrow weather providing.

Money pit.

It’ll be worth it in the end.

This one is still 100% 23k miles later.
