Hub bearings - what to do?????

  S2000
As some of you may know I have been having some problems with my hub bearings. I had the bearings replaced about 1500 miles ago and recently the noise retuned and there was again some play in the wheel.

Having checked out a few things to do with the bearing going again I was told tat I should probably replace the hub as the bearing carrier was probably f**ked. I have just removed the old hub in the last couple of days and picked up another one from the scrappies. However having tried pacing the hub firmly down on a work bench and then rocking the disc there is a very very small amount of play to be felt in the original hub but with the one from the scrappies there is significantly more play. Also, when rotating the disc the hub previously on the c...ar rotates much more freely that th eone from the scrappies.

Basically what i was wondering is wether or not there should be any play at all (even very, very small) in the hub if you try and rock the disc? The reason I ask is that on the one just taken off the c...ar there is a very small amount of movement to be felt but you can't even see the movement visibly.

If this is not the cause of the play felt in the wheel then is there anything else that could be causing the problem that may need replaced?

If I just take the hub itself to a garage should they be able to tell me if the bearing needs replaced?

Thanks.

You will deffo need the bearing replaced, its been sitting round in teh rain no doubt.

FOr a couple quid just do it.

I know if I put the hub from the scrappies on I will need to replace the bearing but I am just wondering if there is any chance that the old one might not have gone as the play in it if you hold the disc really is very, very small. Is there supposed to be any play at all (even if tiny) if you try for play by rocking the disc?

Okay doky. I'll phone the garage who fitted them originally and see if I can get free fitting or something as a good will gesture LOL. Can't see it happening but I'll try my best.

got the same with my valver, had front bearing replaced less than 6 months ago, now the passenger side disc can move about 1" side to side but i have no rumbling sound like i did before. think its probably collapsed:eek:

It's really annoying isn't it mate. I was advised by a few people that if it's gone that quickly then I should get a new hub as the old is probably fucked - which is what has caused the bearings to go again. I have picked one up from the scrappies and it was only £15 so it's not too bad.

Just to update you on what happend. I had some new bearings put in the hub I got from the scrappis and I have now refitted it to the car.

I was really annoyed though when I went to get the bearings put in the hub. I spoke to the garage and asked about the price to get some new bearings pressed into my hub if I just took the hub to him and he said £30 + VAT which I thought was fair enough. However, when I went to collect the hub after the new bearing had been pressed in I found out he meant £30 labour and the bearing itself was £25 so the total cost was £55 + VAT. I was so annoyed when I realised it was going to cost this much as i could have got it done at another garage sooner for £40 in total but thought I wouldn't bother paying an extra tenner to get it done a few days earlier. If the job is, as I believe, just a 10 minute jobn that means that I was charge about the equivalent of £180 an hour

Fuckin' hell!!!

I got a bearing pressed inot my hub the other day and was charged a fiver, last time i had bearings pressed inot ym rear discs they cost me £3 each.

You can get a bearing from GSF, wiht cliiosport discount for £14.50 + vat.

Ripped off fella.

Anyways, hope this one is ok

I know I was well and truly ripped off mate but there was nothing I could do about it as he had already done the job by the time I realised thats the price he was charging. I didn't know you could get the bearing so cheap from GSF though (do they have a webiste?) As I say when he said £30 I thought he had included the price of the bearing in that so I thought fair enough as I want to get it sorted asap and the local motor factors was wanting £25 for the bearing anyway so it would only be £5 labour. When I was quoted £40 from another place for bearing and labour I thought that was a rip off so didn't go there - now I wish I had.

Right here we go again. Having refitted th e new hub and bearing there is what seems a very slight noise still - similar to that of a bearing going. I'm not sure if it's just me being paranoid or if the noise is actually there.

Is there anything I may have done (or not done) when refitting it that may have cause this noise - it is quite quiet tbh but stil there ever so slightly?

Also, what would happen if the hub nut had 1) not been tightened enough or 2) been ove tightened. The reason I ask is that it needs to be put to 200 odd Nm torque but my torque wrench only goes up to 110 Nm.

Thanks.

Had a Vectra a few years ago, that also had a bearing droning noise from the back. Took it back to the garage, they thought it was a wheel bearing aswell, so changed the hub complete, as they said they couldn't just change the bearing, something to do with the ABS, cost them over £300 !! The noise was still there, turned out to be a small flat spot on the tyre.....just thought I'd mention it !

Could be something like that then - I've got some new wheels to put on and that will show if thats the case. I may have a few flat spots TBH as my car locks up really easily in the wet and have had that happen a couple of times unexpectedly. I know for a fact though that the previous bearing had gone as there was a bit of play in it.

What I have found with the new hub though is that if I jack the car up and try to rock the wheel to check for play you can't really feel any sort of play but you can hear a very light clicking noise each time you try and rock it. What could this noise be?
